Two Sundays ago, we were driving along Woodlands Avenue 12 towards Sembawang when we witnessed a disturbing sight. Squatting under a tree by the road in a really heavy downpour were two workers sharing a packet of food. They were exposed to the unforgiving rain, and so was that packet of rice. There was no shelter of any sort in sight. Nearby, their co-workers continued working on the right-most lane of the road.
It may be unavoidable for those in construction work to be exposed to the elements of weather. However, these workers are entitled to having their safety and welfare take care of.
There should have been shelters, even makeshift ones, to protect them from heavy rain, or worse, lightning. One would also question whether the work should have been halted in view of the weather.
I implore the relevant authorities, construction companies and related stakeholders to ensure the safety and welfare of our construction workers. Attention and welfare should not be only for those whose voices can be heard.
