KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem will make an announcement on the state government’s recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) as qualification to join the state civil service in due time.
This was revealed by State Secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Morshidi Abdul Ghani when contacted by The Borneo Post yesterday.
According to him, the detailed mechanism on the recruitment of UEC holders into the state civil service would be discussed further.
“The chief minister himself will announce it (UEC recognition for entry into the state civil service) in due time,” he said.
Asked when the chief minister would make the announcement, he said it would depend very much on the chief minister himself.
Commenting on the announcement made by SUPP president Senator Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian in a press conference on Monday, Morshidi said Dr Sim’s statement was in principle accurate.
However, when asked to clarify further on Dr Sim’s statement that UEC holders could now enrol at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, Morshidi said he could not say more than what was reported because this was under the federal government jurisdiction.
Adenan created history of sorts when he gave the long-awaited nod that enables UEC holders to join the state’s civil service.
The chief minister, who is Yayasan Sarawak chairman, went a step further when he gave Yayasan Sarawak the go-ahead to provide education loans or scholarships to UEC holders.
Unimas may join the bandwagon and open its doors to UEC holders, but its senate had not made any decision yet.
Its vice chancellor, who is also the university’s senate chairman, Prof Dato Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi said Dr Sim had forwarded a request for Unimas to accept UEC students, but a decision had not been made yet.
“There are things to look at, for instance the issue of SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia). It’s not as simple as allowing those with UEC to be admitted (into Unimas).
“We need to study the whole thing first and bring the matter to the senate. After consulting the senate, we also need to consult the Ministry of Higher Education,” Mohamad Kadim was quoted as saying.
It is understood that, as at present, all applications for university admission are processed by the Student Admission Management Division (BPKP or UPU) of the Ministry of Higher Education.
