Tanjung Tuan

Tanjung Tuan

Tanjung Tuan/Cape Rachado

Malaysia's oldest lighthouse(马来西亚最古老的灯塔之一)

Tanjung Tuan, also called Cape Rachado, is the site of the oldest - and still functioning - lighthouse in Malaysia.  Cape Rachado Lighthouse, also called Rumah Api Tanjung Tuan, was built somewhere between 1528 and 1529 by the Portuguese to help guide ships to the Malacca port.  Possession of the lighthouse switched to the Dutchin 1641 and then to the British in 1824 following their respectivetakeovers. Today it houses a MEASAT Rader for broadcasts andcommunications.

Tanjung Tuanis 16km south of Port Dickson. Although it is located within NegriSembilan, it is actually part of Malacca. At this point, the Straits ofMalacca is a mere 40km in width. Tanjung Tuan is where Battle of CapeRachado was fought in 1606, between the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) and the Portuguese. This is the initial foray mounted by the coalition of Dutch-Johorforces against Portuguese Malacca which ultimately led to the surrenderof the Portuguese of Malacca to the Dutch in 1641.

Tanjung Tuan has been a forest reserve as early as 1921, when 80.97hectares were gazetted as the Hutan Simpanan Cape Rachado. However16.19 hectares were degazetted in 1969 for public use. On 5 January1971, the balance 60.70 hectares were gazetted as a wildlife sanctuary.Tanjung Tuan is noted as an important birdwatching area. Migratorybirds can be spotted here between September and March when theyoverwinter.

Tanjung Tuan or Cape Rachado
As named by the Portuguese, meaning Broken Cape is an exclave of the state of Malacca, Malaysia. It is a cape with a lighthouse facing the Strait of Malacca. Though it is administered by the Malacca state government, the area used to fall under the sovereignty of Negeri Sembilan which surrounds it.

The coastal area off the cape, is famous as the site of the naval Battle of Cape Rachado in 1606, between the Dutch VOC and Portuguese fleets, the opening act for the series of conflicts between the coalition of Dutch-Johore and Portuguese Malacca that ultimately ended with the Portuguese surrender of the city and fort of Malacca to the VOC in 1641.

Lighthouse
After Portugal conquered Malacca in 1511, the Portuguese wanted to build a lighthouseto guide its ships. Tanjung Tuan was chosen and the cape was named CapeRachado by them. Subsequently, a lighthouse was built between 1528 and1529. As Malacca switched hands to the Dutch and later to the Britishin 1641 and 1824 respectively, so too did the possession of thestructure.

Forest reserve
In 1921, the area was gazetted as a permanent forest reserve under (No.Warta : 2066 bertarikh 23 Disember, 1921) with 809,700 square metres under the name of Hutan Simpanan Cape Rachado. However, in 1969 an area of 161,900 square metres was degazetted fromthe permanent forest reserve status for the purpose of public use (No.Warta : 328 bertarikh 25 Disember, 1969).

In 5 January, 1971, The rest of the 607,000 square metres of theCape Rachado forest reserves was gazetted as a wildlife sanctuary underthe jurisdiction of PERHILITAN (forestry and wildlife protectiondepartment) under M.P.U.5 and PG No: 85 under the Birds and Wild Life Protection Ordinance, 1955 (Ordinan Perlindungan Binatang-Binatang Liar dan Burung-Burung, 1955).

In 16 April, 1996, a company (Dataran Baiduri Sdn Bhd) was assigned to commercially develop the park.
This area has been designated by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area. The Malaysian Nature Society is active in promoting conservation in the area.

Tanjung Tuan

TanjungTuan is located a short distance down south from Port Dickson Town, apopular beach-side destination for city folks. Tanjung Tuan is essentially a small cape of coastal forest that was spared developmentand gazetted into a park for bird-watching, especially for raptors, aswell as a tourist attraction. The forest is composed of both rainforestand mangrove swamps.

The waters are also rich with corals, making it a popular collecting groundfor marine aquarists. If you use the two main jungle trails in theforest that start from the lighthouse, you will eventually reach somebeautiful beaches where you can swim in crystal-clear waters to yourheart's delight.

While it isoften associated with Port Dickson, and hence, the state of NegeriSembilan (of which Port Dickson is part of), Tanjung Tuan actuallyfalls under the jurisdiction of Malacca. This forest has quite a numberof bird species, including jungle fowls which often scurry across thejungle trails, and the famous raptors that come here to roost in thefirst quarter of the year.

Theforest also brims with insects and reptiles, including large monitorlizards and the ocassional snake. Tanjung Tuan was the site of a famousbattle between Portugese and Dutch forces in 1606, a time when Malaysiawas under the influence of colonial forces. The cape was named 'CapeRachado' by the Portugese and they built a lighthouse on it to guidetheir ships.

When they lost the battle for control over the Malaccan Straits, the cape went to theDutch before eventually falling into British hands when they arrived acentury later. Tanjung Tuan is essentially a translation of CapeRachado in the Malay language, and it is correct to use the Englishname today.

To access Tanjung Tuan, one should head down south on the main road from Port DicksonTown and watch out for the signboard on the right that states either'Blue Lagoon' or 'Cape Rachado'. Turn into the small road and it willbe a short time before reaching the entrance to the park.

Battle of Cape Rachado

The Battle of Cape Rachado, off the present day Malaccan exclave of Tanjung Tuan in 1606, was an important naval engagement between the Dutch Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie and Portuguese fleets.
It marked the beginning of a conflict between the combined Dutch/Johor forces against the Portuguese. It was the biggest naval battle in the Malay Archipelago between two naval superpowers of the time with 31ships (11 of the Dutch VOC and 20 of the Portuguese). Although thebattle ended with a Portuguese victory, the ferocity of the battleitself and the losses sustained by the victor convinced the Sultanateof Johor to provide supplies, support and later on much needed groundforces to the Dutch, forcing a Portuguese capitulation. 130 years ofPortuguese supremacy in the region ended with the fall of the city andfortress of Malacca, almost 30 years later, in 1641.
