http://www.theborneopost.com/201 ... y-of-gas-cylinders/
KUCHING: Petronas and Shell are urged to increase the number of available gas cylinders in Sarawak because demand has increased. The call came from Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs (KPDNKK). Its director Stanley Tan told The Borneo Post yesterday that the shortage could also have been compounded by the problem of gas cylinders being smuggled to a neighbouring country. Tan admitted he did not have the statistics and merely based his claim from feedback he got from consumers. He said gas cylinders, being a subsidised item, are highly priced across the border. “It’s not easy for us to monitor the many illegal routes across the border. One reason is the porous border and another is that many of those involved have relatives over there,” he said. On the issue of 1Malaysia food items being openly sold in Long Bawan in Kalimantan, Stanley said they could be bought in Lawas and re-sold in Long Bawan. “The buying and selling in Kalimantan seem legal as they are not controlled items, except that they are much cheaper compared those of other brands,” he said. Tan was commenting on a news report which quoted a wedding photographer Benny Liew of Penampang, Sabah, saying that 1Malysia food items were sold openly in many sundry shops in Long Bawan when he was there searching for his lost 4WD which he later found. The Borneo Post Adventure Team in July last year heard the locals in Ba Kelalan said smuggling of drugs, stolen cars and grocery goods had turned Ba Kelalan from being a “Highland Paradise of Borneo” to “the Mexico of Borneo”. Because of no Customs and Immigration office in Ba Kelalan, smuggling is rampant. State’s Deputy State Police DCP Dato Dr Chai Khin Chung had, however, recently said they had beefed up policing in Lawas and Ba Kelalan to curb smuggling, especially the smuggling of 4WD vehicles from Sabah to Long Bawan in Kalimantan.
