Case of Falungong Practitioners Arrested on 31 Dec 2000

Thirteen foreigners and two Singaporeans were arrested on 31 December 2000 at MacRitchie Park for holding an illegal assembly. The 15 adults charged comprised 9 males and 6 females aged between 21 and 40. Only 2 are Singapore citizens. Of the 13 foreigners, 5 are permanent residents and the others hold various Passes/Permits.
2 Seven - Li Ying, Hu Jian, Ang Chee Pheng, Xiong Changlei, Gao Hao, Wu Guorui and Xiong Shouyong - were sentenced to a jail sentence of one month for obstructing public servants from carrying out their duty, with the Courts taking into consideration their participation in an illegal assembly. The rest - Chen Hong Mei, Ng Chye Huay, Kang Cui Wei, Ma Xiao, Zhen Hanfei, Zhang Zhao Pei, Xu Dong and Dong Yuexing - were fined $ 1,000 each on the charge of participating in an assembly without a permit with the obstruction charge taken into consideration.
