KUALA LUMPUR: DEFYING City Hall enforcement raids, touts are still harassing motorists to pay parking and toll fees on land owned by Tenaga Nasional Bhd at Taman Connaught‘s Giant Superstore in Cheras. However, the touts seemed less aggressive following the raids as operators lay low, no longer harassing motorists who refuse to pay. Taman Connaught Phase 3 Residents’ Association (RA) president Kennedy Tan said: “The touts no longer make us pay, especially if we are regulars using the route to get home. “However, we hope the illegal collection is stopped altogether. Some motorists are not aware of this.” On Aug 1, Streets reported that 22 university students, with residents of Taman Connaught Phase 1 and 3, formed a committee to campaign against illegal parking and toll fee collection. Touts believed to be foreigners collect a RM1 fee from 6am to 11pm. In the follow-up raid, City Hall demolished the booths but a City Hall spokesman admitted that despite more raids, the touts evaded detention. He advised motorists to ignore the touts’ demand for money and warned touts caught will be detained. Meanwhile, the Federal Territories Land and Mines Office had demolished a booth after receiving complaints of the illegal operation on government land. “We are closely monitoring the situation and was working with the relevant agencies to come up with a solution closely and that it would look into the matter to find a solution together with the relevant agencies.”
