Quek second biggest shareholder of Kencana
Friday March 21, 2008
PETALING JAYA: Billionaire Tan Sri Quek Leng Chan has emerged as a substantial shareholder of Kencana Petroleum Bhd.
A company filling with Bursa Malaysia on Wednesday showed that Quek had bought 5.1% of Kencana, the same block of shares that were traded for RM61.2mil last week.
The shares were sold to Quek by ABN Amro Bank. In another filling the same day, ABN said it had ceased to be a substantial shareholder of Kencana.
Quek is now the second largest shareholder with about 9.9% of Kencana. Before the transaction, he held about 4.8% of Kencana, as mentioned in the company's 2007 annual report.
The oil and gas company is controlled by Khasera Baru Sdn Bhd, a vehicle owned by Kencana executive chairman Datuk Mokhzani Mahathir.
Besides fabrication, Kencana is also into the operation and marketing of drilling rigs via 60% subsidiary Kencana Mermaid Sdn Bhd.
Interestingly, Quek has been reducing his interest in Petra Perdana Bhd over the past couple of months. A filling with Bursa early last month showed Quek now owned about 4.9% of Petra, down from a peak of 13%.
While the tycoon is shifting his portfolio, his moves indicate that he intends to deepen his foothold in the lucrative oil and gas sector.
As it is, Kencana's prospects remain buoyant as it is in the midst of building its first rig with Petronas as a prospective client and the potential higher-than-expected value for three more rigs.
Also, the company intends to venture into marine support service, which would turn it into a one-stop shop for offshore requirements.
The potential successful bid for the oil and gas terminal project in Sabah would also be earnings positive for Kencana. |
