Plenty for all appetites

Food & Tea Hong Kong Restaurant is on the Ground Floor at The Spring shopping mall.

The spacious modern interior make for an ideal environment for dining with family and friends.
Story and photos by Andrea Tan
With a whopping 200 plus food and beverage items on its menu, The Spring’s newest outlet, Food & Tea Hong Kong Restaurant has plenty on offer for breakfast, lunch, tea, dinner and supper.
The restaurant is actually a West Malaysian-based company with ten branches across the country. Its outlet at The Spring in Kuching is the first East Malaysian branch and the company hopes to expand its brand in Kuching, Sibu, Miri and Kota Kinabalu in Sabah. The restaurant is also branching out overseas with an outlet set to open in Jakarta, Indonesia this March.
Its Kuching branch opened mid-January to an overwhelming response.
The items here are affordable, with food ranging from RM2.80 to RM13.80 and beverage between RM2.60 and RM5.90. The portions are also generous, making a dinner with family or friends here truly worthwhile.
A look at the menu and you will instantly be spoilt for choice! Diners can choose from various soups, fried rice, noodles or spaghetti cooked in Hong Kong Style, Shanghai noodle soup, Nissin noodle soup, claypot porridge, Shanghai Style vegetable rice, baked rice in red and/or white sauce, Hong Kong Style cheese baked rice dishes, and favourites like thick toasts and sandwiches.
Hong Kong style beverages and specialty drinks are also a must try. Choose from a good selection of milkshakes, ice blended thirst quenchers and mocktails. There are also hot and cold desserts to cap off your meal including ‘Tong Sui’, a sweet soup or warm custard Cantonese dessert.
It is safe to say that each category in the menu has a bestseller and to list all these down would make this article very lengthy. So for first-timers or those of you who might have missed out on a great food or drink item, allow me to highlight some of the very best this restaurant has to offer.
Let’s start off with a delicious soup served in a way that’s truly unique! The Cream of Mushroom ‘Brulee’ Style is served in a big adorable round bun with its centre hollowed out to make room for the piping hot and creamy mushroom soup. And yes, you can eat the ‘bowl’ afterward.

Ice Cream & Peanut Butter Thick Toast (left) and French Toast with either Peanut Butter or Kaya spread.
Speaking of bread, the restaurant is known for its selection of thick toasts from the savoury to the sweet. A great choice is available for breakfast or tea. These toasts also make great snacks.
If you like pizza, then you’ll simply love the restaurant’s delicious focaccia bread, which is sort of like a pizza. Diners can choose from a variety of focaccias including the mouth-watering Luncheon Meat & Cheese Focaccia, Tuna, Pineapple & Cheese Focaccia or Smoked Ham & Cheese Focaccia. The focaccia is the size of a personal pan pizza and make a great one-person meal.
Another customer’s favourite is the Pork Chop Burger in Macau Style. This is definitely a must-try.

Luncheon Meat & Egg Sandwich.

Luncheon Meat & Cheese Focaccia (left) and Cheese Baked Rice with Chicken Chop.
If you think “rice is nice”, then Cheese Baked Rice is way nicer! On the menu, there are several delightful choices to try like the favourite, Cheese Baked Rice with Chicken Chop. The Cheese Baked Rice tastes wonderful when served piping hot with melted cheese on top.
For those who want something creamier or drenched in a thick gravy, order from the Baked Rice in Red and/or White Sauce selection. But if fried rice is more your style, try the Fried Rice with Chicken & XO Sauce. It’s a bestseller here.
Porridge is the perfect choice to warm up on a rainy and cold day. Food & Tea offers a good selection of ‘Teng Chai’ porridge which is well-known in Hong Kong. Give the Claypot Minced Pork ‘Teng Chai’ Porridge a try.
Noodle lovers can try the Fried Spaghetti with Pork Fillet Hong Kong Style. It is simply a spaghetti dish with an Eastern twist to it and is also a popular choice with regulars at the restaurant.

Yam Cake with Spicy Sambal (left) is a must-try. Also don't forget to order the delicious Seafood Salad Roll (right).
End your meal with a tasty dessert. With the variety of the dessert on the menu, customers will be spoilt for choice. But here’s a hint on what to order: Mango ‘Tong Sui’ for those who want something sweet and love mango; Lotus Seed & White Fungus or Red Bean Sago Lolo if you prefer something healthy and light; or Jackfruit & Water Chestnut if you like a little crunch in your soupy dessert.
The aforementioned items are just some of many food items on offer.
The restaurant’s beverage menu is equally packed with a seemingly endless choice of hot and cold drinks. Therefore, take your time when making your order or you might be missing something great. But then again, you can always come back for more.
The restaurant doesn’t stop at its 200 plus items in the menu. Its food development team comes up with new items and introduce new creations to the menu in every three months. This means that diners will never run out of options.
The restaurant will be launching a range of set menus soon that will include soup, main course, drinks and dessert from RM6.90 onwards. It will also be launching its Priviledge Card this year, which will reward card owners with a 10% discount whenever they dine at any Food & Tea branch.
Food & Tea Hong Kong Restaurant is located on the Ground Floor (entrance from the outside) of The Spring shopping mall at Jalan Simpang Tiga Kuching. It opens between 10 am and 10 pm daily.
* This is a non-halal restaurant.

那天我有走过去看它的MENU(挂在外面)。。很贵咧。。
