A good catch with the Manhattan FISH MARKET
By Connie Chieng
The latest “catch” in Kuching is The Manhattan FISH MARKET, which is ever ready to thrill you with the finest and freshest seafood. This restaurant provides you with a full course of Western meals which include huge lobsters, mussels, mushrooms and shrimps, just to name a few.
Your meal starts with the soup of the day, whereby one can have the choice of either the Manhattan Seafood Chowder of Chef’s Clam Chowder.
There are also choices of greens, from Caesar salad, which is crispy romaine lettuce tossed in Caesar dressing and topped with grated cheese, croutons and eggs, to simple seared vegetables.
Bite into some crunchy country mushrooms, fried in special butter or savour fresh mussels drenched in Louisiana shrimp sauce or delicious oysters. Don’t leave without first trying the buttered mussels. The rich and creamy sauce that goes with the mussels will have you wanting more.
The Manhattan Fish & Chips is an all-time favourite. What you’ll get here is a huge fish fillet fried in delicious and crispy batter as well as golden potato chips.

Besides the dish of fish & chips, you can also choose from other tantalising items under Manhattan Favourites including Grilled Norwegian King Salmon Fillet which is topped with Manhattan garlic butter sauce, and the Alaskan Pollock & Chips (the fish is deliciously fried in a light batter). According to the chef, the Alaskan Pollock is in high demand because of its beautiful texture and great taste. Other good choices are the Garlic Butter Whole Barramundi and manhattan Flamed Prawns.
Try some of the items from FISH MARKET’s Classic Choices. For the health-conscious, the Baked Fish in Garden Herbs is a perfect choice. It is a dish of finely baked fish fillet in natural garden herbs and is a must-try item. The baked fish just melts in your mouth while the garden herbs contribute to the unique taste and aroma of the dish, which got the thumbs up from a number of food reviewers.

The Baked Fish in Garden Herbs is a must-try.
Customers can also opt for Baked Pacific Dory, King Salmon Cajun or Red Hot Whole Fish.
Hold on now ... the best is yet to come! The Manhattan Seafood Platter for Two is simply to die for. Sink your teeth into delicious deep fried fish fillet, calamari, oysters and prawns, all served with potato chips and garlic rice. And get this ... the waiter who serves you this dish comes armed with a spray can which he will use to flame the dish right before he puts it on your table. Talk about a magical meal!

Watch as your Manhattan Seafood Platter is flamed right in front of you.
The said dish comes under the Strictly For Sharing section in the menu. Other items offered include Giant Flaming Whole Lobster Platter, Grilled Gala Platter and Sea Catch Whole Fish Platter.
End your meal with Tuscan Tiramisu. The velvety smoothness of this dessert wil leave you wanting more.
The Manhattan FISH MARKET has a charming story in which a young banker, who is the son of a pastor, decided to chase his dream of being his own boss.

George Ang, the man who started it all.

George Ang (left) and the General Manager of Eastern Times, Ivy Ngo with the menu that lists all the tantalising dishes on offer at The Manhattan FISH MARKET.
Group Managing Director, George Ang, said he worked for seven years at a bank in Singapore before deciding to quit the job and start a restaurant.
He teamed up with his former classmate and had a mere RM30,000 in budget, and of course some help from the bank.
He opened his first Manhattan FISH MARKET restaurant at Mid Valley Megamall in Kuala Lumpur.
That was five years ago, and the rest, like they say, is history.
After Mid Valley Megamall, the duo went on to open more outlets all over West Malaysia, Singapore and Bangkok, and now Sarawak.
He now has 24 Manhattan FISH MARKET outlets, the latest of which being the branch at The Spring shopping mall at Jalan Simpang Tiga here. There is also another branch which opened earlier at the Boulevard Shopping Mall at Mile 4, Kuching-Serian Road.

Customers dine in a wondeful ambience and are assured of the best service at The Manhattan FISH MARKET.
At The Spring, the 2,240 square feet Manhattan FISH MARKET caters to 120 persons at a time. Ang believes that they can achieve gross sales of RM300,000 per month.
Ang said The Manhattan FISH MARKET was not all about selling fish. With its simple wood panel decor and bright walls, customers get to dine in a wonderful ambience.
“The service and ambience here makes a person feel like he is eating in an American restaurant,” he said.
He added that people who come here from work will leave with big smiles on their faces.
“That is why I emphasise on service for my customers. I want my customers to be happy besides enjoying good food,” he said.
Besides expressing hopes of opening more outlets in other parts of Sarawak, Ang also has plans of setting up 10 Manhattan FISH MARKET outlets in the Middle East soon.
