IOI Corp dives 11% but analysts see opportunity
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 29 - Shares of IOI Corporation closed almost 11 per cent lower at RM2.19 yesterday in a sea of red on the Kuala Lumpur stock exchange as the overall market shed 3 per cent.

IOI was battered after news on Friday that it may have suffered what Citigroup estimates could have been RM165 million in translation losses on foreign exchange and futures contracts.

The company itself has made no such estimate, telling Bursa Malaysia last week that translation losses or gains are routine matters in the ordinary course of business.

Due to the continuing concerns expressed by various quarters and the conflicting media reports on the alleged
foreign exchange trading losses suffered by the Group despite the Company’s earlier announcement dated 24
October 2008, the Company wishes to furnish the following information to further clarify the matter.

The realised foreign exchange loss for the 1st quarter of FY2009 is approximately RM100 million.
(Full year FY2008 – realised foreign exchange gain was RM7 million).
As stated in our earlier announcement, the nature of the Group’s downstream business is such that a lot of our
sales to established customers are for the forward months, sometimes up to two years forward. These sales
are secured against forward raw material purchases which are often denominated in different currencies,
mainly Malaysian Ringgit and US Dollars. Accordingly, the Group has been utilising various methods of forward
currency coverage and hedging to match the respective income streams and raw material purchase costs to
minimise its exposure to the foreign currency risk and hence, protecting its operating margin.
Finally, the Company wishes to further assure its shareholders that the financial position of the Group
remains strong and it has no problem in meeting the cashflow requirements of its business operations.

改產化學柴油　開拓棕油市場

（吉隆坡29日訊）馬來西亞中華工商聯合會總會長丹斯裡鐘廷森提出兩大建議，即把棕油製造成化學柴油及開拓更多市場，希望棕油價格能夠止跌回升。

他表示，我國應與印尼、泰國及大型的棕油生產者合作，把棕油製成化學柴油，以減少庫存量。

他披露，目前我國的庫存量為200萬噸，而印尼則有200萬噸。

他希望棕油促銷局能開拓更多市場，把棕油引進到目前仍少量使用棕油的國家。

鐘廷森今出席「油棕業是否依然是閃爍的明星」講座會的開幕禮後，於記者會上說，我國原棕油期貨隨著國際原油和大豆油挫跌，但他相信下跌情況只是暫時性，經過政府的多項措施後將會回穩。

他指出，由於國內園坵坐落在郊區，因此原棕油價格下跌，將打擊這些鄉鎮的經濟活動。

他說，原棕油價回跌趨勢若延續，中長期將冷卻國內的通脹率，特別是居高不下的糧食價格，因許多食品的生產原料皆少不了植物油，而棕油則是最廣泛使用的植物油。

他表示，棕油屬必需品，比起大豆或花生油等，棕油的生產成本是最低的原產品，所以無論行情多麼不景氣，棕油仍然有龐大的需求量，本地棕油業者對經濟不景無需過於擔憂。

他續說，政府取消暴利稅，無形中也減輕了國內棕油業者的一些負擔，隨著政府日益重視國內農業及原產品，棕油業的前景依然樂觀。

The planter assures shareholders it can meet cash flow requirements, despite a RM100 million foreign-exchange loss in the fiscal first quarter

IOI Corp Bhd, Malaysia's second-largest plantation company, said it had incurred a loss of RM100 million on foreign-exchange contracts and sought to assure shareholders its financial position "remains strong."

The loss came in the company's fiscal first quarter in the three months to September, according to a filing yesterday to the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange. That compares with a foreign-exchange gain of RM7 million in the last financial year, it said.

IOI said on October 24 that while currency losses or gains from forward sales of palm oil are "normal," they have recently become "more significant."

The stock slumped 19 per cent that day amid speculation about the extent of the losses, followed by a decline of 11 per cent on October 28.

"The company wishes to further assure shareholders that the financial position of the group remains strong," the statement said. IOI "has no problem meeting cash flow requirements," it added.

IOI stock gained 2.7 per cent yesterday to close at RM2.25, valuing the company at RM13.8 billion. The statement on the first-quarter foreign-exchange loss came after the end of trade. - Bloomberg
