Toyota will be launching a new Prius for the Japanese market on December-2, where the model is known as the Aqua. The new model is a mid-lifecycle update and will feature a slightly more efficient hybrid drivetrain, along with a longer list of convenience features. Also joining the refreshed Aqua line-up is the Aqua G's (G Sports), which has been refined to deliver better handling. More on Aqua G's later. From the outside, the new Aqua looks almost identical to the previous model, except for a new Deep Amethyst Mica Metallic colour option. Total exterior colour choices are now 11. The most important improvement made is to the Aqua's hybrid drivetrain. The Aqua's claimed fuel economy has been improved from 35.4 km/litre to 37 km/litre. Of course, this is tested under the Japanese JC08 driving cycle and not the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) that we usually refer to. Toyota says the improvements in fuel economy are achieved by reducing internal friction within the engine, as well as a more efficient inverter and motor. On the inside, the graphics on the instrument panel has also been mildly improved. The symbols for turn signal indicators and EV mode have been changed to a brighter shade of green. Additional features in the new Aqua include automatic folding side mirrors, water repellent front side windows and a Hill Start Assist feature. The more performance oriented Aqua G's features a sportier suspension system, whose coil springs and dampers have been tuned by the company's in-house tuning division Gazoo Racing to deliver better handling.
