Weaver arrives, practices with the Jazz
Published on Mar 31, 2011 04:00PM 3 Comments
Kyle Weaver, the newest member of the Utah Jazz, practiced with the team for the first time Thursday morning.
A 6-foot-6 combination guard from Washington State, Weaver will be on the active roster Friday night, when the Jazz play Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers at EnergySolutions Arena.
"I'm happy, excited," Weaver said. "It's a good situation. Great feeling to be here. I know a lot of guys are banged up right now and they are struggling a little bit. Just being here, I want to compete in practice -- and if I get an opportunity to play in games."
Weaver was with Austin of the NBA Developmental League when he got the call from the Jazz.
With Andrei Kirilenko and Ronnie Price already ruled out of the Laker game with injuries -- and with Raja Bell and Devin Harris officially listed as questionable by the team -- Weaver will likely see some action against the Lakers.
Asked what he hopes to contribute to the Jazz, Weaver said, "Just to compete. Just to work. I want to let everything come to me. I don't want to force things. Defensively, I want to be a pest out here. Offensively, [the Jazz] are a team. They share the ball. They get up and down. I just want to bring, personally, what I do as a player." |

Jazz playoff hopes end with loss to Lakers, 96-85
By Brian T. Smith

The lost season is almost over.
After suffering a record-setting midseason collapse, the Jazz were officially eliminated from playoff contention Friday night with a 96-85 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers at EnergySolutions Arena.
It marks the first time since 2005-06 that the Jazz haven’t qualified for the postseason — and just the fourth time in the past 28 years for an organization long associated with Jerry Sloan and playoff basketball.
A struggling Utah (36-40), a team that has dropped seven consecutive games, can now only fight for a winning season. And by falling apart again during the second half — this time being outscored 54-37 by the Lakers — Utah will set two NBA records for futility. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Jazz will become the first team in league history to start 15-5 and 27-13 and not make the postseason.
“It’s disappointing,” Utah coach Tyrone Corbin said. “We thought we had a chance to fight our way back in it. We thought we could get things figured out to get back in the race. But it just never turned.”
C.J. Miles scored 24 points to lead Utah, while Al Jefferson added 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Kobe Bryant’s 21 points topped the Lakers (54-20), who won their ninth consecutive game and 17 of 18.
Miles said the Jazz’s most straightforward goal each season is to make the playoffs. But after winning just nine of their past 36 games, a year dominated by frustration, dramatic change and unexpected turmoil — highlighted by the resignation of coaches Jerry Sloan and Phil Johnson and the shocking trade of All-Star guard Deron Williams — will now end April 13 with a home game against Denver. |

Kings extend Utah's skid to 6 with 106-97 win
Posted Apr 03 2011 8:41PM
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) Tyreke Evans had 24 points and 10 assists to lead the Sacramento Kings past the slumping Utah Jazz 106-97 on Sunday night.
Rookie DeMarcus Cousins added 17 points, nine rebounds, six assists and five steals before fouling out in the game's final minute for the Kings, who ended a two-game slide. Francisco Garcia had 17 points and Marcus Thornton scored 15.
Paul Millsap scored 21 points for the Jazz, who dropped their sixth straight game - Utah's longest slide since a nine-game skid from March 4-19, 2005. Kyle Weaver had a career-high 19 points, and rookie Gordon Hayward also scored 19.
Evans started the fourth quarter by connecting from the perimeter and igniting the Kings, who never let the lead slip under eight points in the fourth.
Evans got going in the third to help the Kings maintain their lead. He scored nine points and both Cousins and Garcia had eight, helping Sacramento take a 81-72 lead into the fourth.
Darnell Jackson scored 11 points in the opening half for Sacramento, which led 50-40 at the break. Leading by seven points after one quarter, the Kings opened the second with a 15-2 run that put them ahead 41-21. Heyward scored 12 points for Utah.
Despite starting the season 15-5, Utah was eliminated from playoff contention Friday with a 96-85 home loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.
It didn't help Utah that starters Andrei Kirilenko (knee), Devin Harris (hamstring) and Raja Bell (calf) all missed the game, along with reserve Ronnie Price (leg).
It's been an extremely difficult final two months of the season for the Jazz. Hall of Fame coach Jerry Sloan shocked the organization by retiring Feb. 10, and two weeks later the Jazz traded All-Star point guard Deron Williams to New Jersey.
The Jazz are 5-18 under new coach Tyrone Corbin, who lost the interim tag shortly after he took over for Sloan and was given a contract through the 2013 season.
Notes: Utah rookie Derrick Favors picked up three fouls in 5 minutes and quickly went to the bench early in the second quarter. Cousins had four first-half steals, one more than his previous season-high. ... C.J. Miles missed all seven shots and had zero points in the first half. He finished with six points. ... The Anaheim City Council voted unanimously Tuesday on a $75 million financial package that could help lure the Kings to Orange County. The council also voted in favor of paying for any of the franchise's relocation fees. |

Sloan is not coming out of retirement unless he has the backing of the Miller family. I know first hand the reason why Sloan quit!!! Here it is......Sloan called a timeout he set up a play to be run and Deron wanted to run the play a different way. Sloan stated that he was the coach and things were to go the way he wanted it to be played! During the middle of said play Deron switched it back to the way he had wanted it and it resulted in a turnover. Sloan was miffed to say the least! The next day he wanted to suspend Deron for not following the play however Greg Miller would not allow him to suspend him. Sloan than explained to Greg Miller that he had an arrangement with his father in the past....Sloan would allow him to run the team his way (if you read "Driven" it mentions this in the book too. Miller says that "we aren't going to have the inmates run the asylumn" i.e it's Sloan's way or the highway). Greg than informs Sloan that his agreement ended with his Father's death.... at that moment Sloan quits! Right there on the spot!!! Greg is surprised he tells Sloan to sleep on it for 24 hours and to think about it! Sloan does and feels even better about the decision. A press conference is called and the rest is history!

Gordon Hayward shines as Jazz shock Lakers

Los Angeles • Gordon Hayward has taken the next step.
When the Jazz drafted Hayward last June with the No. 9 overall selection in the 2010 NBA Draft, some of Utah’s devoted fans booed. Less than 10 months later, Hayward has put together back-to-back games that have given the risky pick serious credence.
The 21-year-old rookie forward poured in a season-high 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting, grabbed six rebounds and dished out five assists during the Jazz’s 86-85 victory against the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night at Staples Center.
Strong and confident from the second he entered the game, Hayward was at times the best player on Utah’s injury-depleted roster. He was easily the most aggressive. Hayward held his own defending Los Angeles’ Kobe Bryant, who was limited to 20 points on just 6-of-18 shooting. The former Butler standout mixed long-range jump shots and slicing drives with a throwdown slam dunk on the offensive end. And Hayward scored 14 points after halftime, allowing him to eclipse a previous season-high of 18 that he set Sunday during a loss to Sacramento.
Hayward grew up idolizing Bryant. He outscored, outworked and outplayed the former NBA Most Valuable Player on Tuesday.
“I’m getting better day by day,” said Hayward, who is a combined 17 of 28 from the field for 41 points during his last two games.
The rookie did his best work when the game was on the line. Hayward scored 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting during the fourth quarter, playing all 12 minutes and teaming with fellow 2010 lottery pick Derrick Favors to pick apart the Lakers (55-22).
“We all did a good job,” said Favors, who recorded a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. “Me and Gordon and Jeremy [Evans] — Jeremy came in and gave us some good minutes off the bench. It was just playing hard.”
Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin has preached hard work since taking over midseason for Jerry Sloan, asking his team to fight on even though the season is technically over. After speaking with Utah on Monday prior to practice — reminding his players that they still have pride and progress to play for — Corbin finally got what he wanted.
The Jazz (37-41) entered the game with only eight healthy and nine active players — one above the league minimum. But Utah performed like it was still fighting for a playoff spot. The Jazz knocked off the two-time defending NBA champions, snapped an eight-game losing streak, and won on the road against the Lakers for the first time in 18 games — a streak that dated back to January 2006.
“It’s huge because of the effort,” Corbin said. “Our guys stayed in there.”
The Jazz tied the game at 50 after Favors fought for a rebound and dropped in a putback basket with 3:29 left in the third quarter.
Utah then jumped ahead 75-73 after Hayward drove the lane and dished to Favors, who converted a three-point play.
Two late 3s by Bryant tied the game at 85 with 32.3 seconds left.
But Hayward hit the back end of two free throws to put Utah ahead, and a last-second shot by Bryant never materialized. Guarded by Hayward as the clock wound down, the ball slipped from Bryant’s hands.
The Jazz’s rebuilding project took a major step forward. |

Utah Jazz drop game to Trail Blazers 98-87
Published: Friday, April 8, 2011 12:00 a.m. MDT Associated Press
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Gerald Wallace scored 29 points and Nicolas Batum added 21 to lead the Portland Trail Blazers over the Utah Jazz 98-87 on Thursday night.
Wallace scored 20 points in the second half as the Blazers wore down the injury-hampered Jazz, who had only nine healthy players.
The win moved Portland (46-33) into sole possession of the sixth spot in the Western Conference. The Blazers are a half game ahead of New Orleans.
The loss assured Utah (37-42) of its second losing season in 28 years. The Jazz were 26-56 in 2004-05, the only other time they finished below .500 since 1982-83.
Devin Harris, who returned after missing five games with a strained hamstring, tied a career best with five 3-pointers and led the Jazz with 26 points, but he also committed seven turnovers.
Wesley Matthews scored 18 points and LaMarcus Aldridge had 12 for the Blazers. |

Jazz start well, finish poorly vs. Spurs
First published Apr 09 2011 10:44PM

Another Jazz game. Another Jazz loss.
Utah’s losing ways continued Saturday night against the Spurs, as Richard Jefferson’s 20 points powered host San Antonio to a 111-102 win at the AT&T Center.
Al Jefferson’s 23 points and eight rebounds topped Utah, which dropped its 10th game in 11 matchups.
Just two contests remain for a Jazz (37-43) team that has already been eliminated from playoff contention, and has been guaranteed a losing season for only the second time in 28 years.
“We gotta finish this season with our head up high and have some pride for ourselves,” Jefferson said. “We just ain’t going out here and lay down. We’re going to play hard.”
Utah started well, opening a 14-10 lead. But Paul Millsap was plagued by early foul trouble, C.J. Miles’ late-season swoon continued and Devin Harris’ touch was off. With three starters either struggling or sitting on the bench, the Jazz soon fell behind.
San Antonio (61-19) took a 25-22 advantage into the second quarter. The Spurs then closed the half with a 9-0 blitz, running off the points during a 1-minute, 39-second flurry before the break.
“They are a great ball club,” Utah coach Tyrone Corbin said. “They don’t care who leads them in scoring every night, as long as they win the game. They do a great job of sharing the ball. If one guy is struggling, they go to the next guy.” |
