Williams scores 32, Jazz rout Magic 117-105
Posted Dec 11 2010 12:55AM
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Deron Williams figured the way to score against the NBA's best defense was to attack it head-on.
"I just wanted to be aggressive. They gave me some opportunities to get down the lane and make things happen and I took those," said Williams, who scored a season-high 32 points to help the Utah Jazz beat Orlando 117-105 on Friday night, the highest total the slumping Magic have allowed all season.
CJ Miles scored 19 of his season-high 26 points in the fourth quarter for the Jazz, who swept the Magic this season.
"I felt good. I moved around and they were in a zone, which allowed me to see the open shots," Miles said after the highest-scoring fourth quarter this season by a Jazz player.
Paul Millsap had 22 points and Andrei Kirilenko added 17 to help the Jazz complete their six-game homestand with a 4-2 mark.
Jameer Nelson scored 19, Brandon Bass had 18 and Vince Carter 17 points in the Magic's season-high fourth straight loss.
"I just think we let them take it to us, instead of taking it to them," Nelson said.
Pushing the ball against the weary Magic in the third quarter, Williams scored 16 points in the period as the Jazz opened a commanding lead.
"Deron Williams took a close game and took it over in the second half. He dominated us," Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy said.
After Bass made two free throws to trim it to 71-67, Williams sparked an 11-2 run that ended with his pass to Kirilenko for a 3-pointer that pushed the lead to 82-69 with 2:47 left in the third quarter.
In Utah's 35-point fourth quarter, Miles answered each Orlando push with clutch baskets. Then when the Magic converted five straight offensive possessions into points for the first time, Williams and Kirilenko kept pace with a pair of long jumpers.
"We've been working on shooting the 3 since we've struggled of late. But we got confident today. Going against the zone, we knew we had to make some shots to be successful," Williams said after the Jazz went 10 of 16 from beyond the arc.
The Magic finally whittled the lead to 109-102 on Nelson's 3, but Kirilenko made a jumper and a fast-break dunk to bury the Magic with 1:56 to play.
Orlando came in yielding a league-low 91.1 points and the most an opponent had previously scored on the Magic was in a 110-106 loss to Toronto on Nov. 12.
"It reminded me of the difference between us and Boston last year in the playoffs. They're willing to make the extra pass, and we're not," Van Gundy said.
Kirilenko is nursing a strained right quadriceps and was questionable before the game, but seemed to be everywhere with 13 rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots.
One night after scoring 39 in Orlando's 97-83 loss to Portland, Dwight Howard had 12 rebounds but scored just 14 points on 5-of-15 shooting and had at least three of his shots blocked by the Jazz.
"Our big guys did a great job. They didn't let him get those quick layups and held him until help arrived. We double-teamed and tried to avoid those positions where he's one-on-one with our big guys," Kirilenko said.
Bass started the game instead of Quentin Richardson, and Chris Duhon did not play for the first time this season as Van Gundy searches for a combination that will stop the slide.
Howard thinks the Magic may be overreacting.
"Everyone needs to calm down, that's it. You are going to lose games," Howard said. "When all we talk about is the losing, then we're going to keep on losing."
Though both teams are leaders in field goal percentage defense, each shot over 50 percent in the first half and Millsap's 20 points led to a 58-57 Jazz advantage at the break.
"Today was just a great team victory. In the first half, it was Paul. In the second half CJ came on and I got going a little bit. We are just a balanced team and tonight was a testament to that," Williams said.
The Jazz shot nearly 54 percent and outscored the Magic 18-5 on fast breaks. Though the Magic had a 41-34 rebounding edge, Utah tied a season high with 10 3-pointers, a mark it set at Portland on Nov. 20.
Notes: Rookie Gordon Hayward, who was the ninth overall pick in the draft out of Butler, made his second career start in place of Raja Bell (strained right adductor) but went scoreless in 18 minutes. Center Kyrylo Fesenko was out with a sprained left ankle and Magic forward Ryan Anderson missed his fourth straight game with a sprained right foot. After the Jazz mascot, Bear, was presented with an award in between quarters, Howard gave him an impromptu hug to the delight of the crowd. |

很可惜,面对西部第二的小牛,逆转失败
Nowitzki gets 31, leads Mavs to 12th straight win
Posted Dec 12 2010 12:31AM
DALLAS (AP) The Dallas Mavericks squandered a 25-point first-half lead before Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry saved them down the stretch.
Nowitzki had 31 points and 15 rebounds, and he combined with Terry for Dallas' final 21 points as the Mavericks extended their winning streak to 12 games with a 103-97 victory over the Utah Jazz on Saturday night.
The Mavericks raced to a 29-4 lead midway through the first quarter, then had to rally down the stretch behind Terry's 12 fourth-quarter points and Nowitzki's nine.
"They slowly chipped away and chipped away and finally tied the game there in the fourth, and we had to really dig deep, grind it out and get some stops," Nowitzki said. "(Terry) got hot at the right moment which really helped, and made shots for us down the stretch. ... We definitely made it harder on ourselves than we should have."
Nowitzki went 10 for 12 from the floor.
"He's on a great run," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "You're not going to shoot 10 for 12 every night, but a guy of his skill level is capable of it."
DeShawn Stevenson added a season-high 17 points, going 5 of 7 from 3-point range, and Caron Butler had 16 points for Dallas.
The Mavericks put on a long-range shooting clinic, hitting 14 of 26 from beyond the arc to prevail in a matchup of Western Conference heavyweights.
Dallas-area native Deron Williams scored 19 of his 34 points in the first half and paced the Jazz, who had won nine of 11. Paul Millsap added 16 points and Ronnie Price scored 14 for Utah.
Dallas made 13 of 18 field goal attempts in the opening quarter, going 7 for 10 from 3-point range, and the Mavericks went on to stretch the NBA's longest current winning streak.
The Mavericks (19-4) are off to their best start since 2002-03 and the second-best in team history.
The Jazz tied it at 89 with 4:31 left on Williams' three-point play, and Utah was within 96-95 with 2:40 remaining on Price's 3-pointer.
But Nowitzki drove for a layup, was fouled and converted the three-point play for a 99-95 lead with 2:19 left.
Al Jefferson's follow shot with 29.9 seconds left got the Jazz within 99-97.
But Nowitzki drew a double-team and passed to Terry for a 3-pointer from the right corner with 7.6 seconds remaining to extend Dallas' lead to 102-97.
"I told Dirk that I'm in the corner and I'm ready," Terry said. "Dirk did a great job drawing the defense. The passer makes the shooter."
The Jazz beat Orlando on the road Friday night, and the players didn't get into their hotel rooms in Dallas until early Saturday morning.
The fatigue showed early as Dallas bolted to a 16-2 start capped by five consecutive 3 pointers, two by Nowitzki, two from Stevenson and one by Butler.
When the Mavs extended their lead to 21-2 on Tyson Chandler's alley-oop dunk with 5:58 left in the first quarter, Utah coach Jerry Sloan used a second timeout during the run to settle down his team.
"It looked like we weren't interested," Sloan said. "I hate to say that, but I have to be honest about it. I think you have to be interested in wanting to win and not looking for excuses to be tired or whatever the case may be."
The Mavericks went on to their 25-point advantage on Butler's 3-pointer before the Jazz finally got untracked, finishing the quarter with a 15-5 spurt.
"We moved the ball great and we got stops," Carlisle said of his team's fast start. "It was kind of a magical 6 or 8 minutes."
The Mavericks, who beat the Jazz for the 13th time in their last 15 meetings in Dallas, held Utah to 44 percent shooting from the field (36 for 81).
"This is the best Mavs team I've seen since I've been in the NBA," Williams said. "Across the board, they have so much talent and depth. But they're just playing a lot better defensively. This is by far the best defensive team we've seen from them."
NOTES: C Mehmet Okur (left Achilles' tendon) and G Raja Bell (strained right adductor) remain out for Utah. Okur hasn't played this season and Bell sat out his second straight game. ... The longest winning streak in Mavericks history was 17 games in the 2006-07 season. ... The Mavs held their annual Seats for Soldiers Night, with season-ticket holders donating their courtside seats to members of the Armed Forces. |

Williams, Jazz send Warriors to 7th straight loss
By LYNN DeBRUIN
Posted Dec 14 2010 12:56AM
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Deron Williams scored 30 points and reserve C.J. Miles had 20 points and six rebounds to lead the Utah Jazz to a 108-95 victory Monday night over the struggling Golden State Warriors.
The win avenged an 85-78 road loss Nov. 5 to the Warriors (8-16), who dropped their seventh straight and 12th in 13 games.
Paul Millsap added 16 points for Utah, including 10 points in the third quarter when the Jazz (18-8) outscored Golden State 31-24 to take a 74-70 lead.
Dorell Wright led Golden State with 20 points, including four 3-pointers. Reggie Williams added 10 for the Warriors.
Both teams were missing key players. The Jazz were without starting guard Raja Bell, who missed his third straight game with a groin injury, and backup center Francisco Elson, who was in Canada having his visa updated.
The Warriors were without second-leading scorer Stephen Curry, who missed his second straight game with an ankle injury. Curry is averaging 20.1 points and 5.6 assists a game.
Golden State outrebounded Utah 46-40 and made 11 3-pointers, but it wasn't enough once Williams got rolling.
Kyrylo Fesenko's dunk off a pass from Williams gave Utah a 74-70 lead entering the fourth quarter, and the Jazz went on a 7-1 run to open the fourth that gave them the breathing room they would need.
Utah outscored Golden State 34-25 in the fourth quarter.
The Jazz once again got off to a slow start and at one point were shooting just 27.3 percent until Williams hit a 3-pointer and scored on a fastbreak layup.
The Jazz went on a 16-4 run to open the second quarter. Miles started it with a driving layup, Andrei Kirilenko added a pair of steals and baskets, and seldom-used rookie Jeremy Evans brought the crowd to its feet with three dunks to give the Jazz a 36-27 lead with 7:30 left in the half.
Golden State responded with its own 17-7 run, including three straight 3-pointers. The Warriors hit five 3-pointers in the first half and outrebounded Utah 25-20 to take a 46-43 lead into halftime.
Reggie Williams had the hot hand for Golden State early, making all five of his shots, including 3 of 3 from 3-point range for 14 first-half points. Wright kept Golden State in it with three more 3-pointers in the third quarter, while Williams and Millsap carried the Jazz with 11 and 10 points, respectively, in the quarter.
Notes: Before the game, Deron Williams was presented with his Western Conference Player of the Month award for November. ... Rookie Gordon Hayward made his third straight start in place of Bell, but scored just one point. |

爵士打得不好 黄蜂打得神准 惨败~
不过好消息是 OKUR 回来了
West leads Hornets past Jazz, 100-71
By BRETT MARTEL
Posted Dec 17 2010 10:50PM
NEW ORLEANS (AP) David West's accuracy and Utah's shooting slump combined to give the Hornets an easy night.
West scored 23 points, Chris Paul had 11 points and 10 assists, and the New Orleans won its second straight, 100-71 over the Jazz on Friday night.
Hornets reserve guard Marcus Thornton, seeing a sudden surge in playing time, scored 19 in his second-straight double-digit performance, while Trevor Ariza scored 17.
The Jazz came in 10th in the NBA in scoring at 101.4 points per game, but shot poorly and got few second chances as the Hornets finished with a season-high 53 rebounds, 29 more than Utah. The Jazz shot 35.8 percent and finished with a season low in points.
Paul Millsap had 14 points for Utah, which lost for the fourth time in 11 road games. Deron Williams and Al Jefferson each scored 10.
Coming off a game in which they overcame a 23-point deficit against Sacramento for the largest comeback in franchise history, the Hornets made this game a lot easier on themselves, taking a 20-point lead late in the first half and posting the largest margin over the Jazz in team history.
The Hornets shot 50.7 percent and were 19 of 22 from the free throw line, with West going 7 of 9 on field goals and hitting all nine of his foul shots. Thornton was 8 of 10 from the field and was 3 of 5 on 3-point attempts.
Thanks to Thornton and 10 points from fellow guard Jarrett Jack, the Hornets reserves outscored Utah's 37-22.
Paul often has not matched up well against Williams, who was taken one pick ahead of him in the first round of the 2005 draft. That was not the case this time. Williams had trouble staying in front of the smaller Paul several times as the Hornets star aggressively used crossover dribbles and hesitation moves to create space for himself.
In one sequence in the third quarter, Paul drove around Williams and hung in the air as he banked a shot over defenders rotating in to help. Williams took the ball right back at Paul but his layup missed, and the Hornets went the other way to set up Belinelli's 3, which gave New Orleans its biggest lead at 70-41.
The Hornets started to build their first sizable lead after Jefferson's turnaround jumper had pulled Utah to 16-14 in the first quarter. New Orleans scored the next 11 points, highlighted by Thornton's first two baskets early in the second quarter.
Thornton later hit his first 3 of the game, making it 40-22. The Hornets went up 48-28 on Ariza's driving dunk, followed by Paul's weaving dribble and double-pump floater from the lane.
Gordan Hayward hit a 3 from the left wing late in the quarter to cut New Orleans lead to 50-33, and that score stood until halftime.
Notes: Mehmet Okur played for the first time since April 17th, when he ruptured his left Achilles' tendon in Utah's opening playoff game against Denver. He had two points and an assists in a little less than 11 minutes. ... Utah had only three rebounds in the second quarter. ... The Jazz scored the fewest first-half points of any Hornets opponent this season. ... Announced attendance was 14,414. |
