Badminton/All England Championships: Old warhorses battle on
By : K.M. Boopathy
WORLD No 2 Lee Chong Wei remained solid while veterans Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah demonstrated that consistency is the key to success as they marched into the quarter-finals of the All England Championships at the National Indoor Stadium in Birmingham on Thursday.

Chong Wei easily downed Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia 21-18, 21-11 and was involved in a mouth-watering quarter-final clash against Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia early this morning in Malaysia.
Tan Fook, 32, and Wan Wah, 33, also proved that age is hardly a barrier as they downed Americans Howard Bach-Bob Malaythong to set up a quarter-final clash against Indonesians Luluk Hadiyanto-Alven Yulianto, also early today.
Joining them in the last eight was women's World No 8 Wong Mew Choo who produced another gritty performance to topple Jiang Yanjiao of China 22-20, 23-21 in 44 minutes in the second round.
Mew Choo played South Korea's Hwang Hye Youn in the quarter-finals.
National doubles coach Rexy Mainaky, after seeing four of his pairs crashing out in the first round, was a relieved man as Tan Fook-Wan Wah refused to get sucked into complacency and avoided the fate which dumped defending champions Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong out of the tournament on Wednesday.
Rexy, in a telephone interview from Birmingham, said the veterans' initiative is something the younger players can learn from and emulate in future.
"Tan Fook-Wan Wah have reached at least the quarter-final stage without fail no matter what their form is. They have become consistent and this is one quality which is missing from younger pairs like Kien Keat-Boon Heong," said Rexy.
"Not only have they avoided losing to lower ranked pairs, they don't normally lose to the same pair twice. They fight back and even if they go down, they give their best shot.
"I hope that the younger pairs understand that consistency is something which can take them higher and they must not rest on their laurels after losing to someone."
Tan Fook-Wan Wah are chasing a place in the final for the third time, having finished runners-up to Denmark's Jens Eriksen-Martin Lundgaard Hansen in 2004 and 2006, in probably their last appearance at the All England.
Meanwhile, Mew Choo's steady progress in the tournament is an indication that she has recovered from a dip in form after winning the China Open last November.
Mew Choo's coach Wong Tat Meng, in a telephone interview from Birmingham, said the former is back on track after being inconsistent over the last three months.
"Mew Choo was off track for a while but she has shown the kind of performance she is capable of here. Mew Choo can only get better," said Tat Meng.
"It is not easy to play Yanjiao. Although Yanjiao is probably one of the shortest players in China's squad, she is very fit and a little deceptive.
"What Mew Choo needs now is to keep producing quality performance against top shuttlers and she is doing that regularly now."
Women's doubles Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui, however, could not reproduce the form that took them to the semi-finals last year when they went down 18-21, 21-16, 21-10 to World No 1 Zhang Yawen-Wei Yili of China in 51 minutes. |
