Suns-Jazz notebook
By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Friday October 29, 2010 2:32AM
THE FACTS: Phoenix guard Steve Nash scored 18 points and had five assists to lead the Suns to a 110-94 win over the Utah Jazz on Thursday night. Hakim Warrick sparked the Suns off the bench with 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Jason Richardson had 16 points. Al Jefferson led Utah with 20 points.
QUOTABLE: "Well, it was undoubtedly an important game for us. We played pretty well in Portland and just fell apart at the end. Tonight, I thought we learned a little bit of a lesson from Portland, we held our composure for longer stretches, and in particular, at the end of the game."
-- Steve Nash on his team rebounding from its season-opening loss to Portland.
THE STAT: The Suns' starting backcourt of Nash and Richardson severely outplayed Utah starters Deron Williams and Raja Bell. Nash and Richardson combined for 34 points on 13-for-24 shooting while Williams and Bell combined for 20 points on 6-for-24 shooting.
TURNING POINT: The Suns never trailed against the Jazz, but had to fight off a few rallies in the third quarter. Phoenix put the game away late in the third with a 9-2 run. Channing Frye started the spurt with a 3-pointer, Jared Dudley sank two free throws, and Warrick and Goran Dragic added layups to make it a 84-69 Phoenix lead. Utah never got within single digits again.
QUOTABLE II: "We're trying to do too much. We're trying to make the extra pass, make the perfect play. Sometimes when you do that it's worse than if you just put it up there on the rim. I think we were trying too hard tonight."
--Bell on Utah's early season struggles.
HOT: Richardson caught fire in the second quarter. He scored 11 of his 16 points in a six-minute span. He made a 3-pointer with 29.1 seconds left in the first half, and then beat Utah's defense down the court for a layup to give the Suns a 58-42 lead at halftime.
NOT: The Jazz shot poorly as a team in the first half at 35.8 percent. Four of the team's starters ? Andrei Kirilenko (1-for-6) Jefferson (4-for-12), Bell (1-for-5) and Williams ? actually brought the percentage down.
FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Dragic is only useful in the deepest of leagues ? but that would change if he played against the Jazz every night. Dragic, a Jazz-killer last season, had another productive game in Utah with 11 points and six assists in 15 minutes.
ROOKIE WATCH: Jazz rookie Gordon Hayward provided Utah with a brief spark in the second quarter. He had a coast-to-coast layup to cut Phoenix's lead to 27-26, and scored on a fast-break to make it 32-30. He had four points and five rebounds in 13 minutes in the first half. His play cooled off after halftime as he finished with six points and six rebounds in 25 minutes.
NOTABLE: In the first half, the Suns made as many 3-pointers as they did free throws (seven). Phoenix has won two straight games in Utah after losing the previous four. The Jazz shot 14.3 percent from 3-point range in the first half.
UP NEXT: For the Suns, Friday vs. Lakers, Wednesday vs. Spurs, Nov. 5 vs. Grizzlies. For the Jazz, Sunday @ Thunder, Wednesday vs. Raptors, Nov. 5 @ Warriors.

5 things Utah Jazz need to improve, and quick
Published: Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010 10:36 p.m. MDT By Jody Genessy, Deseret News

The Jazz offense has been a mess, with players struggling to make proper cuts, to find the right spots and, simply, to hit shots. From near, far and everywhere between. Utah only averages 91 points on 40.9 percent shooting (23.1 percent on 3s). That's New Jersey bad. Oh wait. The Nets are 2-0. Raja Bell isn't too worried: "The shots will come." The Jazz only hope the makes will start coming soon, too.

How rough has it been for Utah's *efense so far? Put it this way: The Jazz have allowed their two opponents to score more points than Golden State has given up. Both Denver and Phoenix scored 110 points, and there's only been one quarter in which Jazz foes have been under 25. Vanna, give 'em a D.

You could say C.J. Miles has been in a foul mood. And it isn't just because he's missed 7-of-8 shots. Miles is averaging just 14.5 minutes while drawing four whistles per game. Veterans Earl Watson, Ronnie Price and Kyrylo Fesenko have yet to earn their cavalry cards, too. Rookies Jeremy Evans (11 points in his only outing) and Gordon Hayward (7.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 1.5 bpg, 0.5 message missiles caught per game) have had bright moments. But overall, the bench has contributed just 26 points and not nearly enough spark a night.

Enthusiasm
Those missing E's are almost even more disconcerting than the mistakes and mishaps with the X's and O's. Missing shots is one thing. Missing in action is another. The Jazz realize that and want to rectify it. "That's one of the biggest things we've been talking about," Miles said. "Coach has been talking about just the effort stuff. That's the biggest thing. We do (that) and we'll be fine."

The Jazz started 0-2 twice in a row at the end of the Stockton and Malone era. But Utah is in danger of starting the season at 0-3, something that happened in the franchise's inaugural season (1974) but hasn't been duplicated since the team ripped its roots out of New Orleans and relocated to the country's other jazzy hotspot in 1979. The good news is that the new Utah Jazz then won two of three in '79 after going 0-4. That, however, was followed by a 14-game losing streak and a 2-19 start in Utah. In other words, the Jazz don't want history to repeat itself 31 years later.

Jazz-Thunder notebook

By Randy Renner, for NBA.com
Posted Sunday October 31, 2010 10:50PM
THE FACTS: The Utah Jazz hadn't held a lead in either of their first two games but led for most of the way Sunday night in Oklahoma City. Utah had five players score in double-figures and cruised to a 120-99 victory over the Thunder.

Paul Millsap led Utah with 30 points and 16 rebounds, while also dishing out six assists. Al Jefferson played his best game as a member of the Jazz with 23 points and 10 rebounds. All-Star point guard Deron Williams added 16 points and 15 assists.

Oklahoma City was once again led by All-Star forward Kevin Durant, who had 28. Point guard Russell Westbrook added 22.

QUOTABLE: "We stayed together and played well. When you get outside shooting at the four and the five positions that's tough to defend. We've always been a good passing team, it's when we don't do it that's frustrating."
--Jazz coach Jerry Sloan

NOTABLE: Utah is usually one of the best passing teams in the NBA but the Jazz had averaged 20 assists in their first two games and the offense looked stagnant. Sunday night, Utah players helped out on 32 baskets with crisp passes.

THE STAT: During morning shootaround, Sloan thought about changing up his starting lineup. He didn't and the starters responded by shooting 34-for-60 and scoring 95 points.

TURNING POINT: Two days of hard practice in Salt Lake City. The Jazz came into this game with a new attitude. Their offense and defense were out of sync in their first two games but everything clicked against OKC.

QUOTABLE II: "We were one of the league leaders on defense last season, but we weren't very good tonight."
--Thunder coach Scott Brooks

HOT: After starting the season hitting just 40.9 percent from the field and 23.1 percent on 3-pointers, the Jazz were 7-for-11 from long range and shot 53 percent overall.

NOT: Oklahoma City continues its struggles on offense. The Thunder hit just 25 percent on 3-pointers and 40 percent overall. Kevin Durant was 4-for-6 from long range, but the rest of the team was just 1-for-14.

INSIDE THE ARENA: A festive Halloween atmosphere. Several fans wearing costumes and kids were trick-or-treating in the concourses.

GOOD MOVE: Reports out of Salt Lake City indicated Sloan was thinking of taking Andrei Kirilenko out of the starting lineup. Instead, Sloan put the long-armed Kirilenko on Durant. Kirilenko pestered Durant into just 3-for-13 shooting and nine points through the middle of the third quarter.

BAD MOVE: Brooks opted to go with Jeff Green on Millsap but Green couldn't contain the Utah forward. Millsap was 12-for-19.

ROOKIE WATCH: Utah's Gordon Hayward scored four points and Jeremy Evans did not score on 0-for-1 shooting. Thunder rookie center Cole Aldrich saw his first action of the season. He rebounded a James Harden miss and slammed it home for his first points of the season. He finished with five points, two rebounds and a steal.

NOTABLE: Oklahoma City has now scored 105 points from the free throw line in just three games for an average of 35 points a game.

UP NEXT: For the Jazz, Wednesday vs Raptors, Friday @ Golden State, Saturday vs Clippers. For the Thunder, Wednesday @ LA Clippers, Thursday @ Portland, Sunday vs Celtics.

Watson..

MC Chan

Williams, Jazz roll to easy win over Raptors

By LYNN DeBRUIN
Posted Nov 04 2010 12:02AM
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Deron Williams came within two rebounds of a triple-double, Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap dominated inside, and the Utah Jazz rolled to a huge early lead en route to a 125-108 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night.

After giving up the first basket, Utah (2-2) scored the next 17 points, then went on another 8-0 tear en route to a 41-22 first-quarter lead.

Williams finished with 22 points, 14 assists and eight rebounds. Jefferson led the Jazz with 27 points and Millsap added 21 in Utah's 11th straight victory over Toronto.

It all started with Williams, the All-star guard. When he wasn't running the fast break, he was feeding teammates inside.

After one quarter, Williams had 14 points and five assists. By halftime he had nine assists as the Jazz pushed their lead to 66-47.

Toronto, which was coming off an embarrassing meltdown Monday night at Golden State, tried to make a game of it in the third quarter. The Raptors pulled within a point behind the scoring of Andrea Bargnani (26 points), Jarrett Jack (14) and DeMar DeRozan (16)

But C.J. Miles (19 points) came off the bench and hit five 3-pointers to end any Toronto hopes.

Utah had two days' rest after winning at Oklahoma City for its first victory of the season. The Jazz looked like the team they were that night, not the one that lost its first two games by a combined 38 points.

The Jazz had six players in double figures, with Ronnie Price adding 11 and Andrei Kirilenko scoring 10. Utah had a 64-46 advantage on points in the paint.

Sonny Weems came off the Toronto bench to score 23 points.
