得分和篮板能力能和 Boozer 并驾齐驱,但是盖火锅和防守能力更为优越! {:3_84:}

爵士的General Manager Kevin O'Connor 估计 Al Jefferson 将百尺竿头,更进一步,迈向职业巅峰期!

Jazz finalize deal for Jefferson
By Ross Siler

The Salt Lake Tribune

Updated Jul 14, 2010 08:19AM
Given the departures of Carlos Boozer and Kyle Korver in free agency, Jazz general manager Kevin O’Connor wasn’t about to describe the acquisition of Al Jefferson as the second coming of the trade that delivered Pau Gasol to the Lakers in 2008.

At the same time, O’Connor couldn’t help but herald the arrival of a player in Jefferson who he billed as one of the best low-post players in basketball, following a trade in which the Jazz seemingly gave up remarkably little in return.

The Jazz completed their deal for Jefferson on Tuesday, sending two future first-round draft picks and center Kosta Koufos to Minnesota while absorbing Jefferson’s $13 million salary thanks to the trade exception they acquired last week for Boozer.

“What we feel like is that we really added a premium player to our team,” O’Connor said, adding, “If you had put him in free agency this year with that crop that they had out there even yet, I think he’d be pretty highly rated, and that’s how we look at him.”

The 6-foot-10, 265-pound Jefferson averaged 20.1 points, 10.4 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in three seasons with the Timberwolves. O’Connor noted that at 25, after six seasons in the NBA, Jefferson should be entering the best years of his career.

Minnesota general manager David Kahn seemed to echo those sentiments. “Al is motivated to have a career-defining season, and I recognize the Jazz will be the recipients of that, not us. I expect him to help Utah immensely,” Kahn said in a statement.

Jefferson became expendable after Minnesota acquired former No. 2 overall pick Michael Beasley from Miami. With Jefferson owed $42 million the next three years, the Wolves traded him to the Jazz in much the same fashion Memphis once dealt Gasol.

Gasol flourished after leaving the Grizzlies to join a contender in the Lakers, while the Jazz hope the same will be true for Jefferson, who hasn’t played on a team that’s won more than 24 games in the last four seasons.

“Talking to him tonight, he’s anxious to get on a team that he feels that there’s some consistency and some continuity and some direction as far as age goes,” O’Connor said. “We’re excited to have him.”

Jefferson has played for teams that have gone 163-329 (.331 winning percentage) in his career. He’ll join a Jazz team that’s made four consecutive playoff trips and help fill the void left after Boozer’s departure for Chicago.

“He’s ready and he’s hungry to really compete at the highest level,” said Mark Madsen, who played with Jefferson in Minnesota. “The bottom line is I think Utah’s a great situation for him, a great situation.”

O’Connor said he talked with Minnesota about a potential Jefferson deal at the February trade deadline and again at last month’s draft.

Although Jefferson suffered a season-ending torn ACL in February 2009, O’Connor noted that he played in 76 games last season even with Minnesota going 15-67. “We expect him to be even better next year than he was this year,” O’Connor added.

Jefferson is expected to arrive tonight and undergo a physical Thursday.

O’Connor said Jazz coach Jerry Sloan was appreciative of the Miller family for pushing the team’s payroll into luxury-tax territory for the second consecutive year to add Jefferson while Deron Williams was looking forward to playing with a top big man.

Jefferson told O’Connor that he was looking forward to the opportunity in Utah, respected the way the Jazz played and noted the success that Boozer and Karl Malone had in Sloan’s offense.

去年爵士选择和 Portland Blazer 竞争价钱留下Millsap  今年选择放弃和 Blazer 抢 Wesley Matthew...   改签旧将 Raja Bell

Bell’s back with Jazz
By Ross Siler

The Salt Lake Tribune

Updated Jul 14, 2010 11:30PM
As Jazz chief executive Greg Miller waited at the airport Wednesday night to greet his newest star in Al Jefferson, general manager Kevin O’Connor was moving to steal a favorite son in Raja Bell away from the Lakers.

The Jazz will bring back Bell, whose career took off during two previous seasons in Utah, on a reported three-year deal worth nearly $10 million while declining to match Portland’s offer sheet to Wesley Matthews.

“He had the Jazz on his short list of teams from the moment free agency began,” Bell’s agent, Herb Rudoy, wrote in an e-mail. “Kevin has been after him from the beginning. Things just fell into place quickly today. Raja is thrilled to be back in [Salt Lake City]! He loved his time there.”

The hope is Bell can deliver the three-point shooting and defense that Matthews brought as an undrafted rookie. Bell, however, will turn 34 in September and played in only six games last season with Charlotte and Golden State after undergoing wrist surgery.

Miller, meanwhile, praised the Jazz’s response this offseason following the departures of Carlos Boozer and Kyle Korver in free agency, saying, “It’s neat to see how persistence can pay off.”

“A lot of people had us kind of sold down the river,” Miller added. “As I often have an opportunity to remind people, you can never count this franchise out. We just quietly kind of go about doing what we do and make every effort we can to be competitive every day.

“There wasn’t a lot of noise made about it, but it didn’t mean we weren’t trying. And then there in the last couple days, we saw some of the fruits of Kevin’s labor.”

Bell, who has averaged 10.3 points and shot 41.1 percent from three-point range for his career, spent two seasons from 2003 to 2005 with the Jazz before signing a five-year, $24 million contract with Phoenix in the opening hours of free agency.

Jefferson, meanwhile, wasn’t even given an airport reception when he went to Minnesota as part of the Kevin Garnett trade in 2007. He said winning in Utah last season felt like a championship victory on a team with nonexistent playoff hopes.

“I’m happy to be here with a chance to finally play with a great team, a playoff team, with one of the best, if not the best, point guards in the league,” said Jefferson, who will officially be introduced today at a news conference.

“It’s a blessing for me, man. I’m just really excited to be here. I’m glad they wanted to make the deal happen. I just can’t say how excited I am to be here.”

Miller said Jefferson was at the top of Deron Williams’ wish list when Williams and O’Connor talked about potential acquisitions.

“I don’t want this team to take no step backwards,” Jefferson said. “I want to continue to go forward. I’m going to dedicate everything I can to help this team get to the Finals.”

Bell’s signing makes official that the Jazz will not be matching the five-year, $32.5 million offer sheet Matthews signed Saturday with Portland.

Matthews’ agent, Lance Young, said he spoke with O’Connor, who told him the Jazz were signing another guard contingent on him passing a physical. That would be Bell, who will join C.J. Miles, Andrei Kirilenko and Gordon Hayward in the Jazz’s wing rotation.

“From an emotional standpoint it was tough,” Miller said. “I love Wes Matthews. He, to me, personifies everything that the Utah Jazz stand for. He’s tough, he’s blue-collar, he’s grind-it-out, he never quits.

Jazz beat Trail Blazers in preseason opener

Posted Oct 08 2010 12:35AM
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Deron Williams scored 15 points, Paul Millsap had 16 points and eight rebounds, and the new-look Utah Jazz beat the Portland Trail Blazers 100-96 on Thursday night in their preseason opener.

Wesley Matthews, who played for Utah as a rookie last season, scored 21 points and Dante Cunningham added 18 points and 10 rebounds for Portland (1-1).

Utah's starters outscored Portland's by 23 points playing almost exclusively in the first and third quarters.

``I thought it was a good group,'' Williams said of the starters. ``Coach is probably going to switch lineups every game, but I thought our group did well.''

Sundiata Gaines scored all of his eight points in the fourth quarter for the Jazz, who debuted new uniforms and a color scheme. Earl Watson hit two free throws with 7.2 seconds remaining to seal the victory.

Utah got six points from center Al Jefferson and five from Raja Bell, both offseason additions to the starting lineup.

``(Jefferson was) looking to pass the basketball,'' Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. ``He's going to score points. He's still getting comfortable with us.''

LaMarcus Aldridge and Rudy Fernandez each scored 15 points for Portland, which lost center Jeff Pendergraph to a right knee injury early in the second quarter. He did not return after being carted off the floor.

``I want to just think positive here and hope that nothing is seriously wrong with Jeff,'' said Blazers coach Nate McMillan, whose team is already without centers Greg Oden and Joel Pryzbilla because of knee injuries. ``From what I saw and having only (Marcus) Camby and LaMarcus as your bigs, we know we have to go out and find someone here soon.''

Jazz rookie Gordon Hayward, the ninth overall selection out of Butler, scored nine points, and fellow rookie Jeremy Evans had nine points and seven rebounds.

``Chasing a great shooter like Rudy Fernandez, it was tough on me in the first half,'' Hayward said. ``Coach and the veterans told me some more pointers and it was better in the second half. I took a lot from this first game.

``It was fun, for sure. I'm glad we got the win.''

Portland scored 40 points in the second quarter to erase most of an 18-point deficit and trail by just three at halftime. But against the Jazz starters, the Blazers managed just 15 points in the first quarter and 14 in the third as Utah extended the lead to 79-69.

NOTES: Utah has won five straight preseason games against Portland. The Jazz are 13-6 all-time against the Blazers in the preseason. ... Utah was without centers Mehmet Okur (Achilles') and Francisco Elson (hamstring).

Jefferson scored eight points and Williams had seven in the third quarter, leading the Jazz (2-0) to their second win in five days over the Blazers (1-3).
LaMarcus Aldridge scored 22 points, including going 12 of 14 from the free throw line, in 33 minutes for Portland.
The game was played in Memorial Coliseum, the Blazers' home facility from 1970-94 before the team moved into the Rose Garden.
Utah shot 68 percent from the field in the second half and finished 36 of 71 for the game.

Jazz hold off Suns 105-100

Posted Oct 13 2010 1:02AM
PHOENIX (AP) Al Jefferson scored 16 points and the Utah Jazz made 21 of 24 free throws in the second half, including 19 in a row, to withstand a Phoenix comeback and beat the Suns 105-100 Tuesday night for their third consecutive preseason victory.

Trailing by eight points entering the final period, the Suns took an 84-83 lead midway through the quarter on a jump shot by Earl Clark. Utah quickly surged back, going on a 17-4 run, sparked by Jeremy Evans' six points, for a 100-88 lead. Again Phoenix rallied, cutting the deficit to 103-100 on a 3-pointer by Matt Janning in the final minute, but the Jazz held on.

C.J. Miles scored 13 points for the Jazz, Othyus Jeffers had 12 and Andrei Kirilenko 10.

Goran Dragic topped the Suns (1-3) with 15 points, Jason Richardson scored 13 and Robin Lopez and Hakim Warrick had 11 apiece.

The Jazz took advantage of Phoenix's sloppy ballhanding and poor shooting to assume a 50-42 halftime lead. The Suns, who have been turnover prone during the preseason, lost the ball 12 times in the first half, compared to only six miscues for the Jazz. Phoenix wound up with 20 turnovers.

Phoenix, which had shot a sizzling 59 percent (10 for 17) in building a 31-25 advantage after the first quarter, slumped to 28 (5 for 18) in the second period, when the Suns were outscored 25-11.

During that period, it was the Utah reserves who did all the damage. Raja Bell, playing against his former Phoenix teammates, contributed five points during the quarter, including a 3-pointer.

The Suns also fared poorly at the foul line in the half, missing seven of 16 free throws.

Jefferson was the only player in double figures at intermission, scoring all of his 10 points in the opening period. Jared Dudley led the Suns with nine, while Steve Nash had seven assists - including six on the Suns' first seven baskets. Nash finished with a game-high 10 assists.

The teams played evenly through the third period, with Utah leading 79-71. The Jazz were able to stay in front thanks to their 14-for-14 free throw shooting. The Suns, meanwhile, were only 7 for 12.

Jefferson, Deron Williams and Miles combined for 27 of Utah's 29 points in the third period, Miles leading the way with 10.

The Suns' Hedo Turkoglu left the game with a back contusion in the second quarter and did not return.

Notes: The Suns played their first three exhibition games on the road and will be away from home for their next two - at Utah and Toronto - before completing their preseason schedule at US Airways Center against Golden State and Denver. ... The Jazz were missing centers Mehmut Okur (left Achilles') and Francisco Elson (strained right hamstring). ... The Suns are only one of three NBA teams to win at least 50 games in five of the last six seasons (the others are Dallas and San Antonio). ... Utah has advanced to the playoffs four straight years and 19 times in Jerry Sloan's 22 years as coach.

Jefferson's 24 points lead Jazz over Suns

Posted Oct 15 2010 12:23AM
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Al Jefferson scored 24 points and the Utah Jazz remained unbeaten in the preseason with a 108-97 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Thursday night.

``My whole career, I've had to score against two, three people,'' said Jefferson, who was acquired in an offseason trade with Minnesota. ``It just feels good to catch the ball and go up. This offense gets along. It gets you the ball in the right spot.''

Rookie Jeremy Evans scored 12 points and Deron Williams added 11 for Utah (4-0), which defeated Phoenix for the second time in 48 hours. The Jazz won 105-100 in Phoenix on Tuesday night.

Hedo Turkoglu scored 13 points and Garret Siler added 11 for Phoenix (1-4), which allowed more than 100 points for the fourth time in five preseason games.

``We've got things to do, things to improve, but all around, everybody's been great,'' Turkoglu said. ``Just got to focus on the things that can really help us get better, like defense and rebounding.''

Jefferson scored 12 points in the third quarter as Utah erased a halftime deficit and took control of the game. The center, acquired in an offseason trade with Minnesota, has 40 points in two games against the Suns.

``He's just getting comfortable,'' Jazz guard C.J. Miles said. ``Tonight he showed that when he relaxes and plays, he gets buckets down there.''

The Jazz outscored Phoenix 53-41 in the second half and outrebounded the Suns 51-34 for the game, led by Paul Millsap's seven.

The first half was marred by a total of 34 fouls. Utah was called for 22 fouls and had three players had at least three. Phoenix shot 30 free throws in the half, compared to Utah's 11. The Suns shot 39 free throws in the game.

Jazz rookie Gordon Hayward continued to struggle with his shooting. The first-round draft pick from Butler went 1 for 5 from the field and is 6 for 23 (26 percent) in the preseason.

``He's a young guy trying to figure out what's going on,'' Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. ``It's not an easy thing. I think he's concerned about getting in foul trouble and he's got to get through that. He's got to push himself a little harder.''

Notes: The Jazz are 4-0 in the preseason for the first time since 1976, when they were in New Orleans. Jazz center Kyrylo Fesenko left the game in the fourth quarter with a sprained right wrist. X-rays were negative and he is day-to-day. Utah played without centers Mehmet Okur (Achilles') and Francisco Elson (hamstring).

Small Jazz play big; Evans ascends; bench dance party
Published on Oct 16, 2010 09:12PM  3 Comments
Postgame notes following the Utah Jazz's 103-91 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers during a preseason game at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

The Jazz were outrebounded by the Clippers by just one (35-34) despite Utah playing with three centers sitting on the bench due to injuries. Utah also recorded 46 points in the paint compared to 34 for Los Angeles.

Jeremy Evans is shooting 75 percent (15 of 20) from the field during the preseason.

Bounce-back game from Paul Millsap. Twelve points on 4-of-7 shooting, seven rebounds and six assists.

Al Jefferson continues to improve. And his pump fake is one of the best in the game.

An aggressive C.J. Miles is a dangerous Miles. Since discarding his self-imposed pressure, Miles has been on fire, turning into the scorer Utah's second unit needs.

Seven assists from Ronnie Price in 20 minutes. His energy has been impressive the last few games.

Gordon Hayward said he played with more aggression.

Hayward: "The past couple games, I think I've been a little passive out there. So I really wanted to go out there and just kind of run. Get in the open court and get some easy baskets that way. Just trying to be more aggressive. Just kind of, when I get the ball, trying to make a play ... attacking the rim. When you get in the game, you've got to start off that way, just to get yourself in the flow."

Only three minutes but two nice long-range field goals from Ryan Thompson.

Mr. Efficient: Andrei Kirilenko scored eight points on 4-of-5 shooting, grabbed four boards, had two assists, stole two balls and earned a block.

The Jazz won every quarter but the first.

Jazz beat Lakers 99-94 with Hayward's 26 points

Posted Oct 18 2010 2:22AM
LOS ANGELES (AP) Rookie Gordon Hayward scored 26 points and the Utah Jazz shrugged off a 19-point third quarter by Kobe Bryant to beat the Los Angeles Lakers 99-94 on Sunday night and run their preseason record to 6-0 for the first time in the franchise's 35-year history.

``A game like tonight just gives you a little confidence,'' Hayward said. ``It's a learning process, and I have a lot to learn from this game. I'm already thinking about what I could have done and what I should have done. It was fun out there tonight. I just wanted to go out there and play hard, don't think about it and let my instincts take over.''

Hayward, the ninth overall pick in the draft after helping lead Butler to the NCAA championship game against Duke, shot 8 for 10 from the field and converted 10 of 11 free throws in his 33 minutes on the floor.

``He just played basketball,'' coach Jerry Sloan said. ``They got after him pretty good early on and took him to the basket a couple of times, but he fought back. That's a good sign for a young player - fight back and continue to play. That's what he does. He's not going to go out there and beat you trying to get 30 points a night. He plays within the game.''

Bryant, coming off arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, played only 20 minutes and sat out the fourth. Pau Gasol led the Lakers with 28 points, 13 of them in the final 6:33 while the sellout crowd kept chanting Bryant's name in vain.

``I'm surprised they were chanting my name. I mean, come on. It's the preseason,'' said Bryant, who played 9 scoreless minutes in the first half. ``I'm sure they'd much rather see me in June than right now. But I still appreciate it.''

The two-time defending NBA champs missed 13 of their first 16 shots and fell behind by 14 points midway through the second quarter. Bryant came up empty on his first four shots before making an understated dunk with 9:57 left in third. He came back moments later with a 15-foot fadeaway jumper, hit a 20-footer that was nullified by a traveling call, and drained a 3-pointer 28 seconds later to put the Lakers ahead 58-56 with 7:15 left in the quarter.

``When Kobe was out there, he had a great run,'' Sloan said. ``They really showed their defensive ability. They just came out and annihilated us. But the important thing is that we tried to keep focused on what we had to do. That's the only way we can get any better.''

Bryant's surge helped fuel a 19-2 run that turned a six-point deficit into a 69-58 lead, the Lakers biggest of the game. They took a 74-73 lead into the fourth with Bryant on the bench, and the lead changed hands four times before Hayward put Utah ahead 79-78 with a 19-footer that ignited a 11-0 spurt.

The Lakers made only three of 14 shots in the final quarter, and none until their ninth attempt, when Gasol's dunk pulled the Los Angeles to 88-84 with 4:25 to play.

``All these games mean something on some level,'' coach Phil Jackson said. ``We had a really good third quarter, but didn't protect the lead we had at the end of the third. I was relatively pleased that we hung in there and had a chance toward the end to win it - playing a couple of rookies and the team we had out there. We just didn't make shots in the fourth quarter.''

痛快 痛快  三天内两次痛宰卫冕冠军

Jazz beat Lakers 82-74, stay perfect in preseason

By GREG BEACHAM
Posted Oct 20 2010 1:46AM
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Sure, Deron Williams thinks it's pretty good to be perfect in the preseason, for what that's worth.

Williams and the Utah Jazz feel much better about the way they got to 7-0: with promising play from their starters and two victories over the defending champs.

Al Jefferson scored 13 points in three quarters before leaving with an injured right hand, C.J. Miles added 14 points and the Jazz stayed unbeaten in the preseason with an 82-74 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night.

Utah took the temporary court atop the Anaheim Ducks' home ice with its expected starting five for next week's season opener. All five made contributions and worked on their chemistry, taking a lead the Lakers' scrubs couldn't overcome.

``Our first group is playing pretty good,'' said Williams, who had 10 points and five assists. ``The timing is still not there, but for the most part, we played hard and played together. We're in a good position for this point in the season.''

Williams sat out the Jazz's back-to-back games at Staples Center last weekend, including Sunday's 99-94 win over the Lakers, with a strained right calf. The star point guard also is expected to skip Utah's preseason finale against Sacramento on Friday, which means this game was the last chance for the starters to work on that chemistry.

Utah is off to its best preseason start in franchise history, but Jefferson winced in agony during the final seconds of the third quarter after apparently injuring his hand while driving to the hoop. The Jazz said he has a bruised knuckle, and Jefferson stayed on the Utah bench for the fourth quarter

Jefferson said he aggravated a bruise on the knuckle of his index finger just above his palm.

``I hurt it the first preseason game, and it never healed because the ball is always going to hit right there,'' the Utah newcomer said. ``I just bent it back real good. I can play with it. It's just something I have to deal with.''

Kobe Bryant can relate to that mentality: He led the Lakers to last season's title while playing most of the season with an injured index finger, which still bothers him.

Bryant scored seven points on 2-for-13 shooting, missing eight of his nine shots in the third quarter. Two days earlier, Bryant scored 19 points in the third quarter against the Jazz.

Neither set of numbers means anything to the two-time NBA finals MVP, who was pleased by his unusually short drive back to his Orange County home.

``We're just moving on, game by game, day by day,'' Bryant said.

Shannon Brown and Matt Barnes scored 13 points apiece for the Lakers, who finish the preseason with back-to-back games against Golden State before beginning their defense of their two NBA titles. Pau Gasol had 11 points while playing 31 minutes.

``We have really good stretches, and we have some where we're not as sharp as we need to be, especially defensively,'' Gasol said. ``Once we clean that up, we'll be fine. The real deal doesn't start until the 26th. That's when we can start making judgments.''

The clubs played before a healthy crowd of Orange County fans at Honda Center, which still aspires to have an NBA team as a full-time tenant in the future.

While Utah's starting five purred, the Lakers' starting five went just 5 for 18 while playing most of the first quarter, including a 1-for-5 effort by Gasol and four misses by Derek Fisher. Los Angeles made just 12 of 40 shots in the first half, but trailed only 38-32 after Utah made 10 turnovers in the half.

Steve Blake and Matt Barnes picked up first-half technical fouls for the Lakers, with Blake getting into a scuffle with Utah's Francisco Elson.

Los Angeles pulled within 73-69 using a lineup led by Gasol and four reserves with 3 1/2 minutes to play, but Kyrylo Fesenko and Earl Watson came up with key baskets to maintain Utah's lead.

爵士队史第一次完美的全胜季前赛!!!{:3_84:}

Jazz beat Kings, finish 8-0 in preseason

Posted Oct 23 2010 12:17AM
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) The Utah Jazz completed the first undefeated preseason in franchise history, beating the Sacramento Kings 82-71 on Friday night.

Al Jefferson, Raja Bell and Kyrylo Fesenko scored 12 points for Utah (8-0), which played without starting point guard Deron Williams (personal reasons).

``We understand it's the preseason, and we don't get cocky about it,'' forward Andrei Kirilenko said. ``But I like that everybody kind of takes it serious and works in the games.''

Beno Udrih scored a preseason-high 17 points and Carl Landry added 13 off the bench for Sacramento (3-4), which finished the preseason 1-3 on the road.

Kings rookie center DeMarcus Cousins missed his first six shots and finished 1 for 7 for four points. Tyreke Evans, last season's Rookie of the Year, was held to seven points on 3-of-9 shooting. Sacramento shot 36 percent from the field and committed 21 turnovers.

``Tyreke needs to break out of his little shooting issues, among other guys,'' said Kings coach Paul Westphal, whose team shot below 40 percent for the fourth time in the preseason.

``I don't like to see a 3 in front of our shooting numbers every night. We have a lot of guys shooting below their normal percentage. It certainly has to come up in order to let your defense have a chance to help you get some wins.''

Utah, held to fewer than 100 points for the third consecutive game, opened the second half with an 11-4 run to push a four-point halftime lead to 55-44. Sacramento got no closer than four points the rest of the game.

``Now we've got to start playing for real,'' Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said, downplaying the undefeated mark. ``The games don't count for anything other than trying to get better at what you're doing, and that's what we look forward to have happen.

``Hopefully we can play a little bit better than we have the past couple of days.''

Jefferson scored eight points in the third quarter for Utah, which outscored the Kings 40-22 in the paint.

The Jazz lost guard C.J. Miles to a right ankle injury midway through the second quarter. He did not return.

Notes: Utah twice finished 7-1 in the preseason (2003-04 and 1994-95). Both teams open the regular season on the road Wednesday. Sacramento is at Minnesota, and Utah is in Denver.

The names and faces have in some ways been set in place since Oct. 7, when the Jazz tipped off exhibition play with a starting lineup of Deron Williams, Raja Bell, Andrei Kirilenko, Paul Millsap and Al Jefferson.

But Utah coach Jerry Sloan finally made it official Monday, naming the players as the team’s starting five as the Jazz prepare to open the 2010-11 season Wednesday in Denver.

Williams and Jefferson were set in stone during training camp, while Millsap was a near lock. The only questions surrounded Bell and Kirilenko, who competed with C.J. Miles in a three-way battle for two spots.

Bell gives the Jazz a lockdown defender who is dangerous from the perimeter; Kirilenko brings versatility, experience and energy. And with Miles buying into the his new role as the offensive and veteran leader of Utah’s second unit, this season’s Jazz are now locked in place — at least for the moment.

“I’d say that’s how we’d go if everybody stays healthy and something doesn’t happen,” said Sloan prior to a morning workout at the team practice facility. “If it does, somebody else has got to step up and get ready to play.”

The only starter currently falling into the questionable-health category is Bell, who is recovering from bursitis of the left rotator cuff. But the veteran guard played through the pain Friday in Utah’s final preseason game, and he expects to be ready for the season opener.
