万华为了騰福能和嫂子共结连理和参加奥运 什么事都依!?
I will follow you, Wan Wah tells partner Tan Fook
KUALA LUMPUR: National men’s doubles shuttler Lee Wan Wah will abide by his partner Choong Tan Fook’s decision as far as their future is concerned.
And that could mean that the veterans are set to compete in their last All-England championships, which will be held in Birmingham from March 4-9.
“If he goes, I will go too,” said the 34-year-old Wan Wah yesterday.
“I cannot imagine partnering a younger player. It will take a while for us to make our presence felt. And at my age, that’s not an option.”
It could be all over for Tan Fook as far as his playing career is concerned when he weds China’s Olympic and world doubles ace Zhang Jiewen after the Beijing Olympic Games.
“Tan Fook and I will probably play together until the year’s end. There are just a few more tournaments after the Olympic Games. Then, the decision is entirely up to Tan Fook. He may stop playing. But if he chooses to continue, I will stay on with him,” said Wan Wah.
“It looks as though it is going to be our last All-England together, for now.
“This year, Tan Fook and I just want to enjoy our game. We have always set targets for ourselves and most of the time we fall short. This time, we just want to have fun.”
Wan Wah, who has finished as the All-England runner-up twice with Tan Fook in 2004 and 2006, was happy with this year’s draw.
The world No. 4, are in the lower half of the draw with second seeds and reigning world champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia, South Koreans Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung, Indonesians Luluk Hadiyanto-Alven Yulianto and two other Malaysians pairs – Tan Bin Shen-Ong Soon Hock and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif. |

Veteran pair Tan Fook-Wan Wah march into second round
By RAJES PAUL
PETALING JAYA: Defending champions Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong crashed out of the All-England badminton championships in Birmingham yesterday, losing to unseeded Japanese pair Shuichi Sakamoto-Shintaro Ikeda. They were beaten 18-21, 19-21 in the first round after battling for 40 minutes. The third seeds failed to get their revenge on the Japanese pair, who had defeated them in the third round of the World Championships in Kuala Lumpur last year. With the defeat yesterday, it is the second time that Kien Keat-Boon Heong failed to retain their title in the Super Series after the disappointment at the Malaysian Open in January. They were the second Malaysian pair to bow out of the competition yesterday. Gan Teik Chai-Lin Woon Fui lost 19-21, 22-20, 11-21 to Hong Kong's Albertus Susanto Nyoto-Yohan Hadikusumo Wiratama in an earlier match. Veterans Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah provided the only cheer for the Malaysian doubles when they beat Canadians Mike Beres-William Milroy 21-16, 21-12 in 24 minutes. The two-time All-England runners-up will now take on the winners of the match between Malaysia's Ong Soon Hock-Tan Bin Shen and Americans Howard Bach-Bob Malaythong for a place in the quarter-finals. Taiwanese Hu Chung-shien-Tsai Chia-hsin also pulled off a big upset yesterday when they defeated two-time All-England champions Jens-Eriksen-Martin Lundgaard Hansen of Denmark 22-20, 21-19. They will now take on former world champions Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen of Denmark, who stayed on top of their game to beat China's second ranked pair Guo Zhengdong-Xie Zhongbo 21-18, 23-21 in 45 minutes. Another title contender in the men's doubles – Tony Gunawan-Candra Wijaya – cleared the first-round hurdle with ease to set up a second round match against South Koreans Hwang Ji-man-Lee Jae-jin yesterday. The American-Indonesian combination, currently ranked fifth in the world, and the Koreans blew away German pairs in under 30 minutes. Tony-Candra, who last won an All-England crown for Indonesia in 1999, eliminated Kristof Hopp-Ingo Kindervater 21-11, 21-16 while world number 10 Ji-man-Jae-jin ousted Michael Fuchs-Roman Spitko 21-16, 21-15. |
