Chat with Simon Thompson and you’ll come away imbued with some of his optimism and can-do spirit. This multi-level marketing (MLM) wizard faced more than the usual challenges when starting out in the network marketing business, but through sheer perseverance, has come out on top.
Now you can read all about his journey from a cadet midshipman in the Australian Navy to the Executive Diamond leadership level in the Amway hierarchy in his new book.Though it has a rather unwieldy title – While You’re in a Traffic Jam, I’m Playing Golf –Thompson’s book offers a rare perspective into what it takes to succeed in network marketing.
It started, he says in a recent interview, with a dream – to be self-employed, to enjoy greater freedom and more time to do what he wanted.
“Money doesn’t motivate me too much,” says Thompson, before quickly adding, “of course, it is important, but it is not the primary thing”.
The 47-year-old Australian entrepreneur was working with an electronics trading company when both he and his wife Diana, made the momentous decision to move to Malaysia in 1992 and stay for a year – at least initially.
“I was looking at starting my own business, when I was approached by a former classmate about joining an MLM. Diana and I had been approached eight times before this, and we just never got it. But this time, Craig, the person doing the presentation, talked about a system to grow your own business.
“As an engineer, the concept of a system appealed to me; it was something I could grasp. Craig already had an upline support team running, and showed me that the easiest way to succeed was to learn from someone who had mastered the system and put it to practice,” explains Thompson.
Armed with this newfound knowledge, Thompson, a father of two, set to work growing his business in Malaysia. But he was confronted by a total lack of support in the local market. “You must remember that it was still early days here. There was no upline here, no mentors, no seminars, and no infrastructure to grow the business. And being a foreigner here, I had to familiarise myself with the market and deal with a language handicap,” recalls Thompson. Juggling a fulltime job, family commitments and running his MLM business on the side took its toll on him, and Thompson writes about the challenges he faced and how he overcame them.
“The system I was attracted to and observed in Australia wasn’t available here. So we had to import bits of the system. It took time to start a team and get them to believe in the system,” he says. A trip to Australia for a seminar helped convince his team to commit to the business. And within three years, Thompson was able to quit his fulltime job with the money he was earning from MLM. And within 3½ years, his wife was able to do the same; and in five years, the couple had achieved their dream of financial freedom.
ow with 15 years of experience in the business, Thompson, who is often invited to speak at MLM gatherings, is determined to share the keys to success in network marketing in his book.
“I think I have ideas and concepts and ways of thinking about the business to communicate with my team. But writing a book requires real discipline. And if I was to write again, I might write a little more about specific leadership concepts that people will find useful,” notes the businessman.
Now, the couple are settled enough in the business to take several months off in a year and go on holiday. “I typically work about 24 hours a week. I spend a lot of time with my kids; more than I would have had otherwise. We also get to travel to many countries that we may not have been able to go to otherwise,” says Thompson, who is still busy “working” the system to climb the ladder to the top level, Crown Ambassador.
“I’ve already achieved the freedom I crave, and spending time with my loved ones, but I still go on working for the sense of achievement – the ego. I want to win and the only way is to move up the hierarchy.”
