Jazz pad Northwest Division lead with easy win over Warriors
By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Thursday April 1, 2010 1:56AM
SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Utah Jazz lead the Northwest Division and are looking to continue climbing the Western Conference standings.
The Golden State Warriors, although they've shown some fight in the last 10 days, are lottery-bound with little to play for other than trying to help coach Don Nelson set the NBA record for most coaching wins.
With the two teams in completely opposite situations during the season's final stretch, the result was fairly predictable.
Utah led by as many as 33 points and cruised to a 128-104 win over Golden State on Wednesday night. The Jazz (50-26), who have won eight of their last 10 games, increased their lead over Denver in the Northwest Division to 1.5 games with the victory. The Warriors (21-53) will miss the playoffs for the 16th time in 17 seasons.
Carlos Boozer had 25 points on 12-for-14 shooting and 13 rebounds, Paul Millsap added 19 points and 11 rebounds and Mehmet Okur contributed 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Jazz.
It was one of Utah's best games of the season, both individually and collectively. Deron Williams dished a season-high 19 assists even with sitting out the fourth quarter. Kyle Korver scored a season-high 21 points on 8-for-12 shooting. The Jazz scored 76 points in the first half, a season-high for points in a half.
A 16-4 run in the first quarter gave Utah a comfortable 35-19 lead. Boozer hit a jump hook to make it 27-16 and the Jazz led by double digits the rest of the way.
"They put the screws to us in the first quarter and just added to it," Nelson said. "That's what good teams are supposed to do."
The Jazz lost a key game to the Warriors late last season, and it cost them in the Western Conference race. They made sure it didn't happen again.
"I think our guys got off to a great start," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "They came out and played hard, got themselves going. Their bodies were alive. I thought they did a good job defensively, and when they did that they got some easy baskets out of it."
The Jazz dominated pretty much all facets of their win over the Warriors, but perhaps what was most impressive was their ball movement and unselfish play. Utah recorded 37 assists on 46 made baskets.
"We did a great job of moving the ball, finding the open man," Boozer said. "We got the ball inside. We did a good job offensively."
Utah's ball movement was spectacular in the first half. The Jazz made six passes on one possession that culminated with Wesley Matthews making a 3-pointer and giving Utah a 52-32 lead. The Jazz made 14 shots in the first quarter and assisted on 13 of them.
"Our guys really pass the ball well," Sloan said. "That gives you a chance every time you're out there. "
The banged-up Warriors were especially overmatched in the paint against Utah. Golden State did little attacking offensively, settling mostly for outside shots. The Warriors missed their first nine 3-point attempts and were 4-for-26 from 3-point range. They scored just 26 points in the paint.
Utah destroyed Golden State on the boards, recording a 57-35 rebounding advantage. |

50 win - 27 lose....
Jazz |

On Kobe's big day, others step up in Lakers' win over Jazz
By Bryan Chu, for NBA.com
Posted Saturday April 3, 2010 2:46AM
LOS ANGELES (NBA.com exclusive) -- On a night when Kobe Bryant made headlines with a new extension, the Lakers managed to pull through without a stellar effort from their leader.
Behind double-doubles from Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol and a late push in the fourth quarter, the Lakers went on to trounce the Jazz 106-92 Friday at Staples Center.
With the victory, the Lakers (55-21) avoided their second three-game losing streak of the season and more importantly set the tone with a convincing win after going 2-3 on their recent road trip.
"It's about time," said Gasol, who finished with 14 points, 16 rebounds and a season-high nine assists. "We can't afford to have games like [those on the road] for now on. ... I think we're getting there, and tonight was a good sign. We have to continue to control our path."
Gasol later added: "We haven't been very consistent this year. Throughout the year, there have been too many ups and downs. I'm looking forward to our team being very consistent throughout the last six games we have left."
After signing a three-year extension earlier in the day, Bryant had a forgettable rest of the evening, recording one of his worst shooting nights, finishing 5-for-23 for 25 points. At one point he was 1-for-13.
Despite the poor performance, Friday was about a 31-year-old guard possibly being locked in as a Laker for the rest of his career.
"It is truly a huge honor," Bryant said. "When I was signing my contract today, I saw a picture of the first one I ever signed when I was 17. I can remember the day like it was yesterday, and if you fast forward to today it is really a blessing to be here."
Asked if this extension meant he would finish his career as a Laker, Bryant said "pretty much."
Though this game wound up a blowout, the Jazz (50-27) kept the game close despite trailing by as many as 19 in the first quarter.
Utah trimmed Los Angeles' lead to 75-71 with 10:49 left in the game.
But then Odom stepped in.
Odom hit a pair of 3-pointers and converted a three-point play. His play was part of a 13-1 run to push the Lakers to a 91-72 advantage with 6:22 to go. That surge ultimately put the game out of reach.
"Their toughness in that first quarter," said Deron Williams, who had 20 points and 10 assists, but was held to just two points in the second half. "... it got to us. That's something we can't have happen again."
Odom had 13 of his game-high 26, which was also his season high, on 11-for-14 shooting to go along with 10 rebounds. Derek Fisher also had a solid game, finishing with 14.
"That's the stamp of our team," Gasol said. "To have so many weapons and quality of players to hurt you. We have to utilize it."
Though it was just one game, this loss was magnified for the Jazz, who dropped from the second to the fourth spot in the Western Conference.
"That's the reality," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "That's the thing we tried to emphasis all along. We're all bunched in one spot and in order to keep yourself above water you need to win."
"I don't think we had a great effort out of a lot of people and we're not good enough to play this team without it. They're too talented."
Carlos Boozer had a stellar outing for the Jazz against a team he often struggles against. The forward tallied 20 points and 18 rebounds. Wesley Matthews chipped in with 14 and three steals.
The Lakers rattled off a 20-2 run to catapult them to a 29-10 lead in the first. They were 10-for-14 to start the game.
In the second quarter, however, Williams nearly single-handedly brought his team back.
Williams scored nine straight in a 12-0 run to cut the Lakers' lead to 42-35. Of Williams' five straight makes, none was more impressive than his steal off Jordan Farmar that led to a breakaway one-handed dunk. Williams had 14 in the second alone on 6-for-9 shooting to help trim Utah's deficit to 54-45 at halftime.
Should the defending champs face the Jazz in the playoffs, Los Angeles has proven that it can handle Utah. The Lakers took the season series 3-1 and in the victories have been by an average of 17.6. |

Williams, Durant go into shootout mode in Jazz's OT victory
By Andrew Aragon, for NBA.com
Posted Wednesday April 7, 2010 1:38AM
SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- It was only fitting that in their Wild West shootout on Tuesday night, Deron Williams and Kevin Durant would take the final shot for their respective teams.
Williams made his. Durant didn't.
Williams hit a 20-foot jumper with 1.1 seconds remaining to give the Utah Jazz a thrilling 140-139 overtime victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder. The win enabled the Jazz (51-27) to take a half-game lead over Dallas, Denver and Phoenix in the race for the Western Conference's No. 2 seed. The Thunder (48-29) had their four-game winning streak snapped.
Williams and Durant put on an entertaining duel in a game that was important for playoff implications, played in a playoff-like atmosphere and was a possible playoff preview. Williams scored a career-high 42 points and dished 10 assists while leading the Jazz to a season-high in points scored.
Jazz rookie Wesley Matthews said it was the best he's seen Williams play.
"I hope he's got more [performances like that in him]," Matthews said. "That was a great effort by him, the way he put us on his back like that."
Durant scored 45 points and missed the last shot of the game on a controversial no-call. Following Williams' jumper that put the Jazz up 140-139, Durant attempted a 3-pointer as time expired. C.J. Miles defended him on the play, there was some contact between the players and Durant's shot fell way short.
"Nah," was Miles' response when asked if he fouled Durant on the play. "I was running by the play. I put my hand in there to disrupt it, and I took my arm out of there real fast and kept running so it didn't give him a chance to hit me real good to make it look like a foul."
Durant and other Oklahoma City players vehemently argued the no-call with officials for a few seconds after the game ended. But after having some time to cool off, the Thunder did just that.
"The referee didn't call a foul," said Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks. "You have to go with him. He had a better look than I had. That's part of it. Sometimes you get those, sometimes you don't."
Williams got his game-winner and it gave him some redemption. He missed a 20-footer in the final seconds of regulation from almost the exact same spot where he won the game for Utah. Williams also had a turnover with 28 seconds left in the fourth that led to dunk by Jeff Green that trimmed the Thunder's deficit to 127-126.
"I just wanted to make up for those two plays," Williams said. "I thought I had that shot at the end of regulation, thought it was good."
The Jazz seemingly had control of the game in the fourth quarter. A 14-2 run gave Utah a 117-104 lead with 4:33 left in the game. A 3-pointer by Williams put the Jazz up 121-110 with 3:01 remaining.
But Durant then put on an amazing shooting display, and got the Thunder back in the game. He scored 12 points in the final three minutes of regulation. His seventh 3-pointer of the game made it 127-124 with 45.4 seconds remaining. He fell down while trying to tie the game late in the fourth quarter, but got the ball to Green, who drained a 3-pointer to tie the game at 129-129 with 8.3 seconds left in the game.
"I don't know that I've ever seen a guy shoot the ball as well as Durant," said Jazz coach Jerry Sloan. "He had some kind of basketball game. He can play like three or four different positions, and it's really difficult. He scored a lot of points, but he does it every day."
The win was sorely needed by the Jazz, as it was the first time they beat Oklahoma City in four tries this season. The Thunder beat the Jazz in Utah by 10 points back in November.
"They're a good team and you can see why," Sloan said.
It was the second time this season the two teams had a game decided by one point. If NBA fans are lucky, it won't be the last time the two teams play this season. The Thunder currently have the sixth best record in the Western Conference, so a playoff series between Utah and Oklahoma City is a possibility.
Tuesday's game featured 15 ties and 13 lead changes.
"If we match up in the playoffs, it's going to be a hell of a series," said Jazz forward Carlos Boozer, who had 28 points and 15 rebounds. "I like playing close games. That's how the playoffs are going to be. That's what tonight was -- an instant classic. Both teams did a great job of hustling out there, fighting for each possession, diving on the floor for loose balls, fighting for every rebound. It was a great game." |

Rockets drop tired Jazz, give Adelman milestone win
By Matt Miller, for NBA.com
Posted Wednesday April 7, 2010 11:37PM
HOUSTON (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Utah Jazz are headed to the playoffs, but the Houston Rockets were the ones who looked like a playoff team Wednesday.
The Rockets delivered one of their best performances of the season, combining crisp ball movement on offense with a spirited effort on defense to defeat the Jazz 113-96 before a crowd of 15,004 at Toyota Center. The victory not only secured Houston's seventh 40-win season since 2002-03, but also made Rick Adelman only the 11th head coach in NBA history to earn 900 wins.
"I've been fortunate. I've had four situations [as a head coach] and three of them have been great," Adelman said. "I was glad to get [900] with our guys this year. To get there, we had to get 40 ... and now we want to see if we can't get a few more.
"We came out from the start of the game and carried it right out through the whole game. I'm sure [the Jazz] were very tired after the game they had last night, but we got after them and took control of the game."
Wednesday's loss is quite the setback for the Jazz, who fell from second place in the Western Conference to at least fourth. They could fall to fifth if Phoenix defeats San Antonio on Wednesday.
One night after using nearly every ounce of energy it had to earn a crucial division win over Oklahoma City in overtime, Utah simply lacked the intensity needed to knock off an aggressive Houston squad.
The Rockets dominated two key hustle areas, outscoring the Jazz by a combined margin of 25-9 on fast breaks and second-chance points in the first half. And while Utah managed to hang around for most of the first half due to excellent shooting, its inability to consistently rotate and put hands in shooters' faces on the defensive end allowed Houston to bust the game open with a 19-8 run to begin the third quarter.
Matters only became worse for the Jazz after that, as the Rockets pushed their lead to 26 points before committing several sloppy turnovers that allowed Utah to cut into its deficit. No matter what Jazz coach Jerry Sloan tried -- going with a small or large lineup -- his team failed to compete at Houston's level.
"They just man-handled us. We couldn't stay with them from the beginning," Sloan said. "It was a long night, and hopefully we will forget about it. I expect a lot from our guys every game. If the energy is not there, it just isn't there."
The trio of Aaron Brooks, Kevin Martin and Luis Scola (24 points on 9-for-14 shooting) did most of the damage for Houston, combining for 74 of its first 96 points. But the defense and rebounding Chuck Hayes (game-high 18 rebounds) supplied may have been the biggest key to the blowout. Carlos Boozer quietly scored 18 points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds, and the rest of the Jazz's big men failed to match Hayes' aggression in the post until it was too late. |

Jazz 的确不擅长打 Back-to-Back {:3_83:}

Jazz's Williams keeping Utah in home-court hunt
By Bradley Handwerger, for NBA.com
Posted Saturday April 10, 2010 12:28AM
NEW ORLEANS (NBA.com exclusive) -- Utah's loss on Wednesday dropped the Jazz from second in the Western Conference to fifth.
The Jazz's 114-103 win Friday night over the Hornets only moved them up to fourth.
Such is life, in a conference where the difference between home-court in the first round and second and fifth is only one game.
For Utah (52-28), it was all about keeping pace with less than a week to play in the regular season.
And that meant making sure it picked up a win at the New Orleans Arena against a team long out of the playoffs and playing for pride.
Per usual, the brunt of Utah's push to stay within the home-court race fell upon the shoulders of Deron Williams.
After the Jazz led by only five points heading into the half, the spectacular point guard did his thing, rattling off nine straight points early in the third quarter, pushing a seven-point game to a 15-point game.
"First half I wasn't trying to be aggressive," said Williams, who finished with 27 points, 16 assists and only three turnovers. "I think I was passing a little bit more. We shot a real high percentage so I didn't feel like I needed to be as aggressive."
It was quite the change for Williams, who had seven of Utah's 26 turnovers in the Jazz's 113-96 loss to Houston two nights earlier and wanted to do nothing but forget about that.
"He knows that he didn't play well," Utah Head Coach Jerry Sloan said about Williams. "You don't have to run and tell him whenever he does that. He just comes out (the next game) and plays. That's what all great players do."
But great teams don't let happen, what happened next.
The Hornets (35-45) came back, cutting a deficit that was at one time 21 points to five points late in the fourth quarter.
"People don't understand how tough it is to play against these teams that are not in the playoffs," Sloan said.
Then again, Williams does understand that. He's why the Jazz still have a legitimate shot at ending the season at least in the top four of the Western Conference.
With the game suddenly anybody's to grab, he nailed a 3-pointer and then assisted on three consecutive positive possessions.
"There hasn't been a guy like him since Jason Kidd who could dominate a game," Hornets guard Morris Peterson said. "Not just scoring. He presents a lot of problems. He's a big point guard. He knows how to post up. He doesn't get the credit he deserves. I think he's one of the best point guards in the league."
The Jazz now head to Golden State for their final road game of the season. A win there and their season finale against Phoenix could be for home-court advantage in the first round.
There's a good chance Deron Williams will make sure Utah has that chance |

Jazz still alive for No. 2 spot, but lose Boozer in process

OAKLAND (NBA.com exclusive) -- It was only after he was asked about possibly facing the Suns that Jazz guard Ronnie Price realized Phoenix had just been removed from Utah's still-lengthy list of potential first-round playoff opponents.
"You see," Price said. "It confuses even me. It changes every day."
In the wake of a 103-94 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday -- accomplished despite Deron Williams playing only 29 minutes because of foul trouble and Carlos Boozer missing the last three quarters due to a muscle strain in his rib cage -- Utah's playoff path is slightly less murky.
Win on Wednesday at home against Phoenix, and the Jazz are guaranteed a Northwest Division title and no worse than the No. 3 seed -- and they could move up to No. 2 if Dallas falls to San Antonio. In both instances, Utah would take on either the Spurs or Trail Blazers.
Lose, and Utah will slide to No. 5, hitting to road to face Denver.
"Two years ago, we were in the No. 2 spot going into the last stretch and we dropped," Price said, referring to the Jazz's 2-2 finish in 2008, which led to a No. 4 ranking and a second-round exit. "That's just how the West is."
Grabbing a No. 2 seed would be a monumental finish for a team that started the season 19-17 and may be without Andrei Kirilenko, who has missed Utah's last 14 games due to a strained left calf, and Boozer, who checked out Tuesday after playing the entire first quarter seemingly without incident.
" robably a month and a half ago, there wasn't much thought of [being No. 2]," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "That's why you try to tell guys to keep playing, working and staying together. Hopefully, you have an opportunity."
Boozer's status is unknown. He's scheduled to have an MRI on Wednesday to diagnose the problem, and declined to discuss the situation directly with reporters.
"I've got a sharp pain in my right side under my rib cage," Boozer said through a Jazz spokesman. "It happened at the end of the first quarter. I didn't get hit, it just happened."
Utah got some critical help in its quest from Denver, which bonked to a 123-101 defeat at Phoenix in the Nuggets' finale. Had Denver won, Utah couldn't have been higher than fourth.
But it was up to the Jazz to escape the trap game against a beleaguered Warriors squad that ran only seven deep. Golden State played spoiler on Sunday against Oklahoma City, notching an upset that helped knock the Thunder into the No. 8 spot.
The teams were tied at the half, but Utah took control in the third quarter despite not having Williams, who picked up his fourth personal foul after just 59 seconds and was forced to the bench for the remainder of the period.
Price came off the bench to provide six assists, four points and four rebounds in the quarter, Wesley Matthews added 10 points and Paul Millsap had seven of what would become a career-high 24 boards.
"They did a great job," Williams said of the reserves. "Even when I came back, [Price] kept scoring the ball. That's the aggressive Ronnie Price we need." |
