MALAYSIAN HIGH FLYERS VISIT WARTON

A group of post-graduate Malaysian students from our sponsored Chevening Scholarship Programme recently paid a visit to our Warton site.
Building relationships The aim of the visit was to build relationships with the group, who are currently studying in the UK, and to promote our products and capabilities, especially Typhoon, which we are promoting as the best solution to meet Malaysia’s requirement for a new multi-role combat aircraft.
Flying Typhoon After meeting with senior representatives, the visitors were given a tour of the Typhoon final assembly facilities and had the chance to fly Typhoon in the flight simulation rig.
Chevening Scholarship Programme Andy Lavin, Programme Director Malaysia said: “The Chevening BAE Systems Scholarship programme is an established, highly prestigious programme for potential future leaders and our sponsorship will enable more Malaysian students to take advantage of this exciting opportunity.” Mind-blowing Suet Mei Kong, who is studying for her masters in Competition Law at Kings College London, said: “Our time in Warton was absolutely mind-blowing. It was such a privilege to visit the Typhoon Final Assembly Hangar and to be able to have a go at the Eurofighter Active Cockpit Simulator - definitely at the top of my best and most memorable moments as a Chevening BAE Systems Scholar. Having to deal with seven girls around aircraft could not have been very easy, but our host answered the many questions and explained patiently. The visit and the presentations have been immensely informative and insightful, I am so grateful for this rare opportunity. Thank you BAE Systems for being the most gracious host, and for the memories which will last a lifetime.”
Once in a lifetime opportunity Fellow student Nurulhuda Zakariya, who is studying for her masters in Law at Queen Mary London, added: “The Warton experience was mind blowing. Though with a legal background, I’m always interested in the mechanics of things in general. Having the chance to see the Typhoon production line and the technological development of the products manufactured by BAE Systems – is a once in a lifetime opportunity that I am very sure I would not have been able to acquire if I was not a Chevening BAE Systems scholar. Anyone can come and study here in the UK, but the privileges given on this programme are priceless.”
Culture of lifelong learning Sponsorship of the BAE Systems Malaysian Chevening Scholarship programme is an important step in developing BAE Systems education programme in Malaysia and aligns perfectly with our approach to education globally, where we have a culture of lifelong learning. In addition, the BAE Systems Malaysia Chevening Scholarships aligns with Malaysia’s Vision 2020 and supports the country’s aspirations to develop leaders to grow and develop the economy through the Economic Transformation Programme.
Sponsorship This is the first year that we as a Company have been involved in this prestigious programme. During 2012 we have sponsored seven students to study engineering and science in the United Kingdom, a further 14 will be sponsored in 2013. The scholarships are managed by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in Malaysia who select the students through a competitive process.
