Hawks end Utah's 12-game winning streak
By GEORGE HENRY, Associated Press Writer
Posted Mar 11 2009 9:54PM

ATLANTA(AP) Deron Williams knew the Jazz wouldn't go unbeaten through the end of the regular season. Even so, Utah's star point guard wished his team had given itself a better chance against the Hawks to extend its winning streak to 13 games. "We got a little complacent at the end of the game,'' Williams said. "We had stretches where we played well and where we played bad throughout the game. They got a lot of transition baskets at the end of the game, and that got the crowd into it.'' Joe Johnson scored 31 points and Josh Smith had 22 points and 12 rebounds to help the Atlanta Hawks end Utah's 12-game winning streak with a 100-93 victory Wednesday night. After Mehmet Okur's 20-footer gave Utah an 87-85 lead with 5:02 remaining, the Jazz failed to score a field goal. "No, we didn't run out of gas,'' Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "We didn't come with gas early. Nobody cares what you did last night; you just come and play hard.'' The Hawks, who ended Cleveland's 11-game winning streak on Dec. 13, led until Okur's straightaway 3-pointer put Utah up 62-60 at the 4:44 mark of the third quarter. Atlanta has won three straight. "This shows everybody in the world the Hawks are for real,'' Smith said. "They have to take the Hawks seriously. Utah is an outstanding team. We played the best in the West and were able to beat them.'' Flip Murray scored 11 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter for the Hawks. Smith ended the scoring with a pair of free throws with 24.3 seconds remaining. "We were being real aggressive,'' Murray said. "We were trying to get to the rim and draw the foul.'' Williams, who was instrumental in holding Mike Bibby to two points on a 1-for-6 performance from the field, led the Jazz with 20 points and nine assists. But Williams' errant pass with the Jazz trailing by two ended with Murray's fast-break dunk with 4:26 remaining. Williams also was dismayed when Smith dunked over Kyle Korver to give the Hawks an 83-82 lead about 3:30 earlier. "(Those plays) took the wind out of us at the end of the game, and we weren't able to regain our composure after that,'' he said. "I think we drove hard in the second half, but things just didn't go our way.'' Paul Millsap had 16 points and nine rebounds for Utah. With a 12-point victory at the Pacers on Tuesday, the Jazz had their longest winning streak since 1996-97. They also had taken 12 straight and 18 of 21 games from Atlanta. After Millsap's jumper with 5:02 left, Utah suffered through two turnovers, Carlos Boozer's offensive foul, two blocked shots by Smith and another by Al Horford. "We'll see what kind of character we've got,'' Boozer said. "If we're an elite team, we'll bounce right back. We won't just sulk. They took it right to us from the tip. We fought back. Then the whole fourth quarter was a great game, a great battle.'' Johnson, who finished with 30 points as Atlanta snapped New Orleans' seven-game winning streak on Monday night, had 21 in the first half. His reverse layup with 4:56 in the second quarter Wednesday gave the Hawks their first 10-point lead.

Wade大取50分。。。 热火3次加时赛击败爵士 140-129

Wade gets 50, Heat rally twice to win in 3OT
By TIM REYNOLDS, AP Sports Writer
Posted Mar 14 2009 4:40PM

MIAMI(AP) Dwyane Wade's day was record setting. And he was only one part of an unforgettable afternoon for the Miami Heat. Wade finished with 50 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists in another dazzling show, Jermaine O'Neal added 28 points and the Heat pulled off two huge last-ditch rallies before beating the Utah Jazz in a triple-overtime epic, 140-129 on Saturday. "Just another day at the office,'' Wade said. It was the first time either team played three overtimes since 1992. The Heat were one point shy of matching the franchise's all-time best, and Miami's Erik Spoelstra became just the 11th coach to win the first five overtime games of his career. But in the end, that all paled besides Wade's ever-growing list of accomplishments. Wade tied his career high in scoring, set new bests in minutes (52 1/2), field goals made (19) and attempted (39), plus passed Alonzo Mourning to become Miami's all-time points leader. "We made them work for everything,'' Wade said. "It was a total team effort.'' Mario Chalmers scored 23 points for Miami, which shot 35-for-39 from the foul line and moved a season-high seven games over .500 (36-29). The Heat also got back within 1 1/2 games of Atlanta for fourth place in the Eastern Conference, and improved to 5-0 in overtime this season. Deron Williams scored 30 points and had 13 assists for the Jazz, who also got a season-high 25 points from Kyle Korver, along with seven rebounds and six assists. Carlos Boozer finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Jazz. "We did a how-to on how to lose a basketball game, pretty much,'' Williams said. "Fouling when we don't need to, trying to score when we definitely don't need to, instead of using our clock. It wasn't very smart.'' The Heat erased a seven-point deficit in the final 55 seconds of regulation, then gave up the first eight points of the first overtime before roaring back again, and eventually took control. Miami outscored Utah 15-4 in the third OT.

Howard's 28, 20 lead Magic over weary Jazz
Posted Mar 15 2009 9:10PM

ORLANDO, Fla.(AP) Dwight Howard doesn't get mentioned very often in the talk about the NBA's MVP award. He might if the Utah Jazz had a vote. Howard had 28 points and 20 rebounds, leading the Orlando Magic to their third straight victory, 105-87 victory over the weary Jazz on Sunday night. "Howard was a monster,'' Utah forward Carlos Boozer said. "He is one of those guys that people don't appreciate like they should. He should be in the MVP talk, too. He cleans up everything and corrects any mistake they make.'' The Magic (49-17) closed within a half-game of the Boston Celtics (50-17), who lost earlier in the day, for the No. 2 seed in the upcoming playoffs. They play at Cleveland (53-13) Tuesday night with a chance to get closer to No. 1. Boozer had 23 points and 13 rebounds for the Jazz, coming off a triple-overtime loss in Miami a day earlier. The Magic got 16 points from point guard Rafer Alston and 14 from backup point guard Anthony Johnson. The Magic built a 13-2 lead and never allowed the Jazz closer than nine points for the rest of the game. Utah dropped its third straight to close a five-game, eight-day Eastern swing. It was obvious early the Jazz were in for a long night. Utah coach Jerry Sloan was ejected just 2:12 into the game after jawing with officials following a foul call against center Mehmet Okur. Utah point guard Deron Williams, who finished with 11 points and nine assists, left the game in obvious pain with 5:05 remaining in the second quarter after banging knees with Howard. He returned in the second half but struggled to spark the Jazz. Howard had 12 points and 11 rebounds in the first quarter, the third time this season he has had a double-double assured in the first 12 minutes. Howard has 52 double-double games this season (second most in the league).

Jazz end skid with win over Wizards
By DOUG ALDEN, AP Sports Writer
Posted Mar 17 2009 11:40PM

SALT LAKE CITY(AP) Deron Williams admitted that the Utah Jazz put an underwhelming end to a three-game losing streak. The Jazz played well enough to beat the Washington Wizards 103-88 on Tuesday night, but knew they got away with mistakes that would have cost them against better teams. "I don't think it was our best effort, but we did what we had to do,'' said Williams, who had 12 points and eight assists. After winning 12 straight, the Jazz had lost the final three games of a five-game road trip and couldn't afford to slip up against the hapless Wizards, who have the second-worst record in the NBA. "It was just important for us to get this one - just for our confidence,'' Williams said. "We had three tough losses on the road and we were struggling.'' Ronnie Brewer scored 13 despite playing only the second and fourth quarters as punishment for oversleeping and missing Tuesday morning's shootaround. Kyle Korver added 15 points on his 28th birthday as seven Utah players scored in double figures. Nick Young and Juan Dixon had 14 points each to lead Washington. Antawn Jamison added 13 points and 10 rebounds and Andray Blatche pulled down 13 boards for the Wizards, who hung with the Jazz for the first half but couldn't keep up in the third quarter. "I thought in the first half our defense was actually pretty solid. In the second half they wore us down and that ends up being the story of the game,'' Washington coach Ed Tapscott said. "It's hard to come back against this team. A lesson learned.'' Mehmet Okur scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds and Andrei Kirilenko and Paul Millsap scored 10 points each for Utah, which finished 41-of-81. Korver went 6-for-9 from the floor and Brewer finished 6-for-10 and had five assists for the Jazz, who won their 12th straight home game.

Without Okur, Williams leads Jazz to 101-94 win
By JEFF LATZKE, AP Sports Writer
Posted Mar 20 2009 10:40PM

OKLAHOMA CITY(AP) Deron Williams felt like Russell Westbrook was trying to challenge him. Once high-scoring teammate Mehmet Okur went out with an injury, Williams had even more incentive to go after the rookie. Williams scored 20 of his 24 points in the second half and added 11 assists, leading the Utah Jazz to a 101-94 victory against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday night despite losing Okur in the first half. "I just felt like I needed to get it going a little bit,'' Williams said. He did just that. Williams hit his first eight shots in the second half and directed a 16-6 run that gave the Jazz a 15-point lead that proved insurmountable. Carlos Boozer added 15 points and eight rebounds, Paul Millsap scored 14 and Okur had 12 points before he was poked in the eye in the second quarter and had to leave the game. Okur had the hot hand for Utah early, so Williams felt the need to replace his scoring - and Westbrook didn't do anything to dissuade him. "The young fella was trying to come at me in the first quarter a little bit,'' Williams said. "I was just trying to get everybody involved. The first half, I thought we were doing a good job executing. "There was really no need for me to force things and get eight turnovers. So, I was just trying to play that role.'' That all changed after halftime. Williams had four baskets and passed out assists on the other four while directing a 16-6 run that put Utah up 71-56 with 4 minutes to go in the third quarter. Williams finished the quarter 6-for-6 from the field and made his first eight shots of the second half in a performance reminiscent of Derrick Rose's 10-for-10 second half shooting in the Chicago Bulls' 103-96 win at Oklahoma City two nights earlier. "If you step back, he makes it. And if you don't, he goes by you and he finds somebody,'' Utah forward C.J. Miles said. "It sounds simple, but defensively trying to guard him, it's real hard.'' Kevin Durant led Oklahoma City with 24 points and 12 rebounds, and Russell Westbrook added 22 points. The Jazz came in with a 13-20 road record that was the worst among the top nine teams in the Western Conference, having lost three in a row after a season-best four-game win streak away from home. But this time, Williams provided a big enough lead down the stretch for the Jazz. Williams' last of eight straight makes to start the second half made it 94-82 with 4:38 remaining, and even missing one of his shots and having another one swatted to start an Oklahoma City fastbreak didn't matter all that much. Westbrook's two-handed jam got Oklahoma City to 97-92 with 32.6 seconds left, but Kyle Korver hit all four of his free throws to close out the game and finished with 10 points. Utah moved into a tie with Portland for second place in the Northwest Division, 1 1/2 games behind Denver. "Utah did a great job running the offense and we couldn't get stops when we needed it,'' Westbrook said. "But I do think we did a good job fighting back when we dug ourselves a hole. They just shot a good percentage from the field and it was just hard for us to get back in.'' Coach Jerry Sloan said before the game that he thought the Jazz were "not a real tough team, and I think that hurts us'' on the road. He changed his tune after Utah avenged a 21-point loss from its last visit to Oklahoma City. "I thought that our team was more ready to play than they have been in some time out on the road,'' Sloan said. Okur, Utah's second-leading scorer with a 17.6-point average, headed to the locker room after getting poked in the eye by Chucky Atkins with 7:41 left in the second quarter and did not return. Trainers reported that he had no structural damage but couldn't return because he was seeing double. Okur had a welt on his right eyelid after the game and was feeling thankful that it wasn't worse. Phoenix's Amare Stoudemire is out for the season after having his retina partially detached. "After I laid down, I couldn't see anything with the right,'' Okur said. "I'm glad it's not as bad as like Amare had. The first thing through my mind was Amare had the same thing.'' Jeff Green had 15 points, Nick Collison recorded his second straight double-double off the bench with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Nenad Krstic scored 10 points for the Thunder. The Jazz took the lead for good with a six-point burst early in the second quarter that Okur finished with a jumper in the lane on his last shot before he went out. Utah then started pulling away with a 10-2 run to go up 45-35 on Williams' runner. Then the point guard went to work again in the second half. "It was a must-win,'' Williams said. "I told the guys that before the game: `This is a must-win game and we've got to come out and this has to be our game.' "That's another reason I tried to step up in the second half is because I didn't want to take any chances of letting this one slip away.''
