brewer, cj miles, millsap

Now healthy, Jazz set to hit road to playoffs at full speedBy Fran Blinebury, for NBA.com
Posted Mar 4 2009 7:03PM
All season long, the Utah Jazz had been the picture that would never come into the focus, the puzzle that was always missing several of its pieces.
You could put your ear to the garage door and hear the sounds -- Clang! Whir! Bang! -- of a team of mechanics trying to assemble the parts of a hot rod, maybe using coat hangars and bubble gum to hold the tailpipe in place.
Deron Williams started the season on the shelf with an ankle injury. Carlos Boozer was lost to knee surgery, then Andrei Kirilenko with ankle surgery. C.J. Miles suffered an ankle injury and Matt Harpring had a bruised back. And that was just the tip of the iceberg.
Coach Jerry Sloan was forced to use 16 different starting lineups as his anchors -- Williams and Boozer -- were on the court together for only two of Utah's first 56 games. So while the occasional rumblings of the engine came from the garage, you were never really sure if the doors would ever swing open to reveal a racing machine ready to hit the track.
Vroom! Vroom! Until now.
Just when it seemed that the Jazz should be mired in self-pity and also grief over the recent death of team owner Larry Miller, they have pulled together to make a statement about their resolve.
The Jazz roared through February as the NBA's hottest team with a 10-1 record and are carrying an eight-game winning streak into tonight's meeting with the Houston Rockets at EnergySolutions Arena. Sloan was named NBA Coach of the Month for February as five of Utah's 10 wins came against teams that would currently qualify for the playoffs, including a pair over two of the top three teams -- Lakers and Celtics -- in the league.
"I've always been proud of these guys, for the most part," Sloan said. "I get upset with them, just like you would with your family at times.
"But they have to always expect more out of themselves. When they're satisfied with being this and that, that's where you have to dig in a little bit deeper and try to get a little more out of yourself. You'll surprise yourself many, many times when you do that."
What's most surprising and even more impressive is the Jazz growing at a time of sorrow. The team has come back to life in the standings just when the entire Jazz organization had to deal with the Feb. 20 death of the iconic team owner Miller from Type 2 diabetes.
Greg Miller, the oldest of Larry and Gail's five children, was put in charge of the family business after his father suffered a heart attack last summer. Greg went into the locker room before the Jazz hosted the Hornets on Feb. 21, one day after his father's passing. He spoke to the players about how his father would like nothing more than to have the team go on a roll.
But, of course, after all those years of seeing Miller sitting in his front row seat, dressed in his khaki pants, polo shirt and sneakers, they already knew that. For while Karl Malone and John Stockton were doing their parts on the court to establish the Jazz as a post-season fixture -- the Jazz made the playoffs 20 straight seasons from 1984 to 2003 -- it was Miller's purchase of the franchise that solidified the Jazz in Salt Lake City and laid down the foundation of perennial success.
Having been turned away at the doorstep to the throne room twice by Michael Jordan and the Bulls in 1997 and 1998 with their fervent owner cheering them on, how poetic would it be for Boozer and Williams -- who reached the Western Conference Finals in 2007 -- to pick themselves up off the floor and off the injured list to make an inspired run now?
It said enough about the Jazz's resilience and Sloan's unwavering philosophy and drive that the team was able to keep its head above water through the first 3 1/2 months of the season. The entire roster was not healthy and able to practice together for the first time until Feb. 20.
"It just feels good for me to be back on the court playing and for all of us to be together again," Boozer said. "It was tough going through the first half of the season, but maybe this means everything will come together at the right time."
Through November, December and much of January, the Jazz were lurking outside the crowded Western Conference playoff picture. But the fabulous February and the winning streak has Utah in seventh place and within striking distance of earning home-court advantage in the first round, just 2 1/2 games out of the No. 3 seed and 1 1/2 games behind Denver for the Northwest Division lead.
The picture has come into focus and the pieces of the puzzle are coming together, even as the franchise struggles with the loss of its leader. They were late out of the garage, but now the Jazz' engine is humming.
"We're not showing any letdown, any back-down," Williams said. "We realize we can beat anybody." |

Boozer back with double-double
By DOUG ALDEN, AP Sports Writer
Posted Mar 4 2009 11:40PM
SALT LAKE CITY(AP) Carlos Boozer looked like an All-Star again. Boozer had his best game since returning after missing three months with a knee injury, scoring 20 points and pulling down 17 rebounds as the Utah Jazz increased their winning streak to nine with a 101-94 win over the Houston Rockets on Wednesday. In his four previous games, two-time All-Star Boozer had been averaging 7.5 points and 5.8 rebounds. "My knee's getting better and better. Every day is an improvement. I'm trying to stay encouraged about it. I still can't jump high, but that's OK,'' said Boozer, who had surgery on his left knee in January. "I'm going to continue to take what they give me and figure out a way to be effective.'' Deron Williams scored 10 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter, including a 20-foot jumper with 21 seconds left after Houston got within three points. Williams also had 14 assists for the surging Jazz, who went 17-for-17 from the foul line and won their 10th straight home game. Ron Artest scored 25 points to lead Houston and Yao Ming had 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists before fouling out with 1:23 left. Yao also had five blocks despite playing with foul trouble most of the night. Two of his fouls were offensive, including the final one when Utah's Ronnie Brewer went crashing to the floor after a collision with Yao in the lane. Brewer pumped his fist before getting up and Yao angrily made his way to the bench. "Every time a defender player is on the ground, even if he just wants to sit down and have a rest, it's my offensive foul,'' Yao said. "That's unfair.'' Yao took one more verbal jab at the Jazz, saying he was looking forward to Friday's game against Shaquille O'Neal and the Phoenix Suns. "I guess I don't need to worry about (a) flopper next game. I don't think Shaq's that type of player,'' Yao said. The Jazz improved to 2-1 against Houston and also moved within half a game of the Rockets in the tight Western Conference standings. "We really needed this game because they're right there ahead of us,'' Williams said. Utah and Houston have met in the first round of the playoffs the last two years and the Jazz won both. The final meeting of the regular season is March 24 in Utah, where the Jazz have won 10 straight. Boozer, who missed 44 games before returning on Feb. 23, finished 8-for-17 from the floor and led the Jazz in a dominant rebounding performance. Utah had 45 rebounds to Houston's 31 and outrebounded the Rockets 27-9 in the first half. "I've been working my tail off trying to get myself back and today it paid off extra,'' Boozer said. Brewer had 19 points and Mehmet Okur finished with 16 points and eight rebounds. Okur also got Yao into foul trouble early and held him to seven rebounds. |

Williams rallies Jazz past Nuggets
Posted Mar 7 2009 1:55AM
SALT LAKE CITY(AP) Utah's winning streak and surge toward the top of the Northwest Division seemed about to end.
Trailing Denver by 19 points, the Jazz were a mess - turning the ball over repeatedly and making just half of their foul shots until something sparked Utah just before halftime.
Utah scored 17 straight points over the end of the second period and beginning of the third and rallied for a 97-91 victory over the Nuggets on Friday night.
"The first half and the second half, there was a great deal of difference in the way we played,'' Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "The second half, we came out and acted like we wanted to play. The first half, they just dominated - just kicked us all over the floor.''
Deron Williams scored 12 of his 25 points in the third quarter and also had 11 assists, his 11th straight game with 10 or more. The Jazz pulled within a half-game of the Nuggets for the Northwest Division lead.
The Nuggets, who had beaten Portland the night before in Denver and appeared to be widening their division lead, but could not stop the Jazz once they got rolling.
Carlos Boozer had 16 rebounds and Ronnie Brewer scored 16 points for Utah.
"We played hard on defense and got some stops, which kind of jump-started us and got us going on offense,'' Williams said.
Williams was 3-for-4 from the floor in the third quarter and made all six of his foul shots for the Jazz, who opened the period 12-for-12 from the line after going 7-for-14 in the first half.
J.R. Smith led Denver with 27 points. Carmelo Anthony was in foul trouble much of the game and finished with 20.
Chauncey Billups added 12 points for the Nuggets, who knew they blew a great chance to win a division game on the road.
"I just feel like every game is a playoff game at this point no matter who it's against,'' Billups said. "I think every game is important and if we don't feel that way then we are going to get beat a lot of nights that we shouldn't.''

Williams' 25 lift Utah past Toronto 109-101
Posted Mar 8 2009 3:25PM
TORONTO(AP) Struggling to wake up when the game began, the Utah Jazz were wide-eyed and ready to go once the fourth quarter arrived. Deron Williams had 25 points and nine assists, Mehmet Okur had 19 points and 11 rebounds, and the Utah Jazz beat the Toronto Raptors 109-101 on Sunday for their 11th straight win. Williams said it was difficult to prepare for the 12:30 p.m. tip-off after flying two time zones east and losing another hour of sleep after the clocks were moved ahead for the switch to Eastern Daylight Time. "It's different,'' Williams said. "I was on the taping table laying down and I fell asleep. That was like 15 minutes before the game, so I was out of it.'' Kyle Korver matched a season-high with 20 points despite a fitful, and brief, night of rest. "Getting up in the morning kind of stinks,'' Korver said. "But once you finally get up, you start going, you have your energy drink and eat your breakfast it's like another game.'' The Jazz usually practice at 10:00 a.m. at home, but early mornings don't often agree with Korver. "It's terrible,'' he said. "I don't even like going to practice in the morning. I would rather practice at midnight. I think all our sleep patterns were kind of messed up last night.'' Paul Millsap had 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Andrei Kirilenko scored 18 for the Jazz, who have won eight straight over Toronto. Utah matched its longest winning streak since an 11-game run from April 1-18, 1999. "I like the feeling,'' Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "We weathered a lot of the storm to try and hang in there. Now if we can keep everybody together and keep everybody happy I think we'll be competitive down the stretch.'' Chris Bosh had 30 points and 10 rebounds for the Raptors, with Andrea Bargnani scoring 20 and Jose Calderon adding 10 points and 11 assists. Anthony Parker scored 16 points but Toronto still lost its fifth straight. Coming up short against the league's hottest team was little consolation to a downcast Bosh. "I don't really care to define a loss anymore,'' Bosh said. "A loss is a loss, I just move on. It really doesn't matter who we play, we're just trying to win games. We've had so many opportunities where we could have turned a corner, but it just didn't happen. We just have to get off this skid right now.'' |

Streaking Jazz beat Pacers for 12th straight win
Posted Mar 10 2009 9:54PM
INDIANAPOLIS(AP) The Utah Jazz prefer not to think about their longest winning streak since 1999. Mehmet Okur's 24 points helped the Jazz beat the Indiana Pacers 112-100 on Tuesday night for their 12th straight victory, moving them one game closer to the franchise record of 15 consecutive set twice during the 1996-97 season. "Don't jinx us,'' Utah forward Carlos Boozer said. Longtime Jazz coach Jerry Sloan wasn't talking about 15, either. "I don't pay much attention to that,'' he said. "We'll just try to keep going day by day.'' To reach 15 will be a challenge. Utah's next three games are at Atlanta, Miami and Orlando. "We're going to set our sights high,'' Boozer said. "The thing about our streak is that we've been able to take it one day at a time. Today, we had to focus on Indiana.'' For a few minutes in the fourth quarter, it looked as if the Pacers could snap Utah's winning streak. T.J. Ford's jumper with 7 minutes left tied the score at 90, but the Jazz answered with a 16-4 run over the next three minutes to pull away. "They're the hottest team in the league and we just couldn't get the stops coming down the stretch,'' said Pacers forward Troy Murphy, who finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds. "We had a good shot tonight, but we weren't able to take advantage of it.'' Paul Millsap had 22 points and nine rebounds, Ronnie Brewer scored 18 and Deron Williams added 12 assists for the Jazz (41-23), who haven't lost since falling 116-96 at Golden State on Feb. 8. "We have confidence that we're going to win every game we play, no matter what the scenario might be,'' said Boozer, who finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. "At the end of the day, we have the pieces, the confidence and the belief in each other that we're going to win the game.'' |
