The word "satay" is derived from Indonesian: sate and Malay: saté or satai, both perhaps of Tamil origin.[5] Satay was supposedly invented by Javanese street vendors as the adaptation of Indian kebab. In the 19th century the term migrated, presumably with Malay immigrants from Dutch East Indies, to South Africa, where it appears as sosatie.
