PSV technical director Marcel Brands has revealed Memphis Depay rejected a move to Liverpool in favour of joining Manchester United.

Brands told Sky Sports on Friday that Liverpool made their move for the 21-year-old Dutch winger, but Depay saw a move to Old Trafford as a better option. The agreement to take the player to Manchester was revealed on Thursday, with Depay set to undergo a medical before penning a four-year contract with the Red Devils.

A key factor in his decision to move to United was the fact Depay was to work with Louis van Gaal, who has mentored him through the early stages of his international career with the Netherlands. Brands revealed that United had made contact several weeks ago, but the move only started to accelerate in recent days.

He said: "Liverpool contacted us and talked with the player. They were also one of the clubs interested but at the end Memphis had the final decision and he chose Manchester United.

"United contacted us a few weeks ago but the direct actions to the club and the player were in the last days and it moved very quickly.

Manchester United transfer news: Ilkay Gundogan 'AGREES deal to join from Borussia Dortmund'

Gundogan, who has already announced he’s leaving Dortmund this summer, has his eyes on the Premier League.

And while Arsenal and Chelsea are both keen, the Daily Star says United have now agreed terms to bring him in.

Reports last week suggested United had sorted out a ￡21million transfer fee for the player, and this deal now looks like going through.

If this turns out to be true, he’d be their second major signing for the summer after the ￡24million arrival of Memphis Depay.
