In Indonesia, it was agreed that the fatal shooting of four students of Trisakti University
was a planned triggering mechanism of the Indonesian riot which had lasted for three days but
resulted with the death of as many of 5,000 peoples comprising mostly the ethnic Chinese.
A government minister reported the damage or destruction of 2,479 shop-houses,
1,026 ordinary houses, 1,604 shops, 383 private offices, 65 bank offices, 45 workshops,
40 shopping malls, 13 markets, and 12 hotels. It was reported that shooting was deliberately
done by an unknown men on motorcycles who appeared on the flyover which overlooks Trisakti.
The identity of these men was never known.

Many months later; a theory surfaced that the instigators to these riots were from the military itself.
An independent investigation into the events managed to record a testimony from a taxi driver reported
hearing a man in a military helicopter encouraging people on the ground to carry out looting; shop-owners
at a Plaza claimed that, before the riots, military officers tried to extract protection money; a teenager
claimed he and thousands of others had been trained as protesters; a street child alleged that Kopassus
officers ordered him and his friends to become rioters; there was a report of soldiers being dressed up
as students and then taking part in rioting; eyewitnesses spoke of muscular men with short haircuts
arriving in military-style trucks and directing attacks on Chinese homes and businesses.

Many believed that the mastermind behind these riots is the
Illuminist General Prabowo Subianto. Prabowo whom was lionized
by his American counterparts as a future national leader;
is believed to have used Kopassus and the army in general
as the instrument to trigger the chaos.

Coutts, the Queen’s bank, has been fined £8.75million for ‘serious
and systematic’ failings when handling money from suspected
criminals or foreign despots.
City regulators criticised the 320-year-old private bank for taking ‘an
unacceptable risk of handling the proceeds of crime’.
The fine, imposed by the Financial Services Authority,
is a record amount for a money laundering offence.

Coutts has been fined £8.75million for 'serious and systematic'
failings when handling money from suspected criminals or
foreign despots

An original penalty of £12.5million was cut by 30 per cent as Coutts agreed to settle at an early stage.
It could be followed by fines for four other banks referred to the FSA for similar offences.

Embarrassment: The Queen is a customer of the bank

Coutts is owned by the Royal Bank of Scotland,
which is 82 per cent taxpayer-owned.
Yesterday Lord Oakeshott, a leading Lib Dem peer, criticised the actions of Coutts.
He said: ‘Taking dirty money from foreign despots is unacceptable behaviour from any British bank, but it is beyond belief when it is RBS.
How can Stephen Hester and RBS’s management dream of taking bonuses when they preside over this systemic and
widespread “ask no questions” culture at Coutts?’
Between 2007 and 2010 staff at the bank, which accepts new customers only if they have at least £1million to invest,
failed to check the source of funds when prospective clients tried to open accounts.
As a result, money could have come from high-risk countries including Libya, Syria and Zimbabwe,
sources at the  FSA revealed.
The FSA first visited Coutts in October 2010 as part of its review into how banks were managing
situations in which there was a high risk of money laundering.


‘Coutts’ failings were significant, widespread and unacceptable,’
said Tracey McDermott, the FSA’s acting director of enforcement and financial crime.
‘Its conduct fell well below the standards we expect and the size of the financial penalty
demonstrates how seriously we view its failures.’ The FSA’s judgment rubbishes the bank’s exclusive reputation

Benedict the XVI is officially no longer pope.
While he cited poor health and a demanding
schedule as the main reason, this hasn't stopped competing explanations from entering the fray. While allegations that the pope was involved in some sort of gay cover-up, or is even gay himself, many are overlooking a little-remembered incident that occurred last March, when suspicious financial activity surrounding the Vatican’s account No. 1365, opened in 2009 with JPMorgan Chase, caused the global bank’s branch in Milan to shut it down.

The account was operating as a sweep account, which facilitates an automatic flow of money at the end of each business day from cash accounts to investment accounts, where the money accrues higher interest. The account was primarily being swept to Vatican accounts in Germany. However, an estimated $1.5 billion had been processed in the short amount of time that the account had been opened, according to Italy’s leading financial newspaper II Sole 24 Ore.

Speculation over money-laundering led JPMorgan Chase to question bankers at the Vatican who ultimately failed to provide an explanation. The Vatican has been under scrutiny for its lack of financial transparency since JPMorgan Chase’s decision to close the account, but no further comment has been made by either party.

A year earlier, the Vatican's bank, formally known as the Institute for Works of Religion (IOR), had employed the help of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to mitigate risk of impending malpractice, and the pope pledged to comply with international rules on illicit financial activity to clean up the bank’s image.

But the Vatican was again embroiled in another series of scandal when letters were leaked, suggesting further allegations of corruption and infighting within the Holy See. The scandal was dubbed “Vatileaks” — a spin on the leading international agitator dedicated to exposing secret information.

The embarrassing letters, which featured outright talk of wrongdoing, crucially hindered the Vatican’s effort to redeem itself and demonstrate proper financial conduct. But they’ve also sparked debate over the possibility that the leak was led from the inside, as either a way of influencing who will succeed the pope, or as a marketing ploy to prequel the pope’s resignation and allow the Vatican time to polish it’s reputation.

This isn’t the first time the Holy See has faced allegations of wrongdoing, but never before has it lost its leader in the midst of one. A rampant series of seemingly self-aware sinister activity on the Church’s behalf has aligned quite nicely with the pope’s decision to resign, effective February 28.

Now, the Vatican has until June to merit inclusion on the “white list” by the European Commission. That list features countries that have taken the necessary steps to fight corruption, tax fraud, and money laundering, which perhaps means that the Vatican should meet the international standards of transparency to ensure compliance in this world before they can again begin speaking of bliss in the next.
