The next Nakamura or Nakata?
13/08/2009
The first two weeks of the Eredivisie season have been dominated by Japanese playmaker Keisuke Nakata. After leading VVV Venlo to promotion last season, Honda appears to be very comfortable at a higher level and is attracting interest from all over Europe.
Keisuke Honda, born in Osaka, Japan in 1986, began his career at the regional club, Settsu FC. Then he moved to the Gamba Osaka junior youth team. After the club didn’t promote him to the youth team, he joined the Seiryo High School until he was picked up by Nagoya Grampus Eight in 2005. He spent the best part of three years at Nagoya, notching up 11 goals in 90 games before branching out to Europe when VVV Venlo of Holland came calling.
Between 2006 and 2008 he played 18 games for the Japanese Olympic team before settling in comfortably in the full squad over a few appearances in 2008 and 2009. His rocket of a shot - with either foot, a decent free kick and mazy dribbles, as well as his passion for tackling back have made him quite a star in Holland.
Honda was named the Player of the Season in the Dutch Eerste Divisie last season, scored 16 goals and was maybe the main reason for the promotion of Venlo to the first division.
His work rate, versatility - playing left or right in midfield and his goals per game ratio - 21 in 52 games so far - has made him a player to watch. He is particularly effective when playing on the right and bamboozling defenders by cutting inside onto his left foot. But this versatile player can also play all along the left flank (including in defence) and deliver a good cross, or in the middle behind the striker where he can utilize a strong left foot. Honda also has good heading ability and he is not a weak player.
In an exclusive interview with www.jsoccer.com and IMScouting - held in fluent English, with a little Dutch thrown in for good measure – in Japan recently, Honda said he was enjoying life as a settled player in Holland but would relish a move to a bigger league like Spain or England.
Honda said that playing in a league as popular and competitive as England or Spain would be a dream. This interview was held before the start of the 2009/10 season, an opening that Honda will never forget.
In the first match, Venlo played away at Dutch giants PSV and Honda came to the fore in a dramatic 3-3 draw, scoring one fantastic goal and providing an eye catching assist. Besides these highlights, Honda was by far best player on the field and it seemed he had the freedom of the pitch to do whatever he wanted.
After the opening game of the campaign, football professionals, fans and pundits were talking about "the Caesar of Holland." The following game saw Venlo face ADO den Haag where at least 30 scouts came to see Honda and he didn’t disappoint, scoring a brace.
Venlo are believed to be holding out for 10 million euro fee for Honda. The 23-year-old said: "I would seriously consider any offers that come my way."
Numerous clubs have been linked, Aston Villa and Liverpool among others are reportedly on his trail. If he continues on the same path, comparisons with Shunsuke Nakamura and Hidetoshi Nakata will be common and success in a major European league looks likely.
