Northrop Pushing E-2D Hawkeye in Malaysia
TAIPEI — The Northrop Grumman Corporation is pushing the latest variant of the “Advanced Hawkeye” airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft for the Malaysian air force at this year’s biennial Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace (LIMA) Exhibition.
Malaysia is among the first countries for which the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye has been approved by the U.S. government. LIMA 2013 is being held on Langkawi Island, Malaysia, March 26-30.
The E-2D exhibit includes the E-2D workstation, but no aircraft was on display this year. “We’ve got the E-2D Tactical Work Station in the exhibit which is a demonstrator of the operator’s workstation in the back and shows the radar images up on large displays,” said Kirsti Dunn, sector communications, Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems.
To date, Northrop Grumman has delivered nine E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft to the U.S. Navy. The program completed Initial Operational Test and Evaluation in 2012, resulting in an operationally suitable and effective rating, and is on track for initial operational capability in the U.S. Navy fleet in 2015.
Intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capability is critical to maintaining national sovereignty, said Mary Petryszyn, vice president, international, Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems. “Northrop Grumman’s leadership in multiple-domain ISR strongly positions us to provide effective solutions for Malaysia’s defense modernization.”
The E-2D Advanced Hawkeye program couples a newly designed electronically scanned radar with a matching suite of sensors, avionics, processors, software and displays to provide the most technologically advanced AEW command and control capability available worldwide, a March 26 press release said.
Lockheed Martin’s new AN/APY-9 radar is the “backbone of this aircraft and provides greater flexibility and significantly improved detection and tracking over all terrains.”
