Euro 2008: Holland star Sneijder injured after training row
Holland lurched into trademark tournament crisis mode last night after a training-ground clash between Arsenal's Robin van Persie and Wesley Sneijder ended with the Real Madrid man in hospital.
Bad blood already existed between the pair and Sneijder was incensed by a foul by van Persie on the eve of Holland's Euro 2008 opener against Italy.
Coach Marco van Basten denied there was a problem despite a furious exchange between the team-mates souring relationships inside the notoriously fractious Dutch camp.
Holland have been plagued by rucks in the past, most notably when Ruud Gullit walked out on Dick Advocaat before the 1994 World Cup and Guus Hiddink sent Edgar Davids home from Euro 96 for accusing the coach of being "up the a***" of skipper Danny Blind.
Sneijder admitted there was an "unfortunate incident".
He added: "I was in a lot of pain from my ankle and had to go to hospital.
Thankfully it's not as bad as it looked."
The midfielder has recovered enough to play against Italy tonight and will line up with with Rafael van der Vaart, who has promised to show why the Premier League big guns should be fighting to sign him.
The Hamburg striker, already on Chelsea's radar, knows Holland's hopes of their first win over Italy in 30 years rest on his shoulders after van Basten lost Arjen Robben to a groin injury on Saturday.
The £15million-rated forward vowed to make the world take notice. Van der Vaart said: "Things went well for me in Euro 2008 and the World Cup but I believe things will go even better here.
"This is the time for me to make it my tournament.
"Everything seems right for me. I feel fit, which wasn't the case in the last two tournaments. I'm coming here on the back of a good season to prove why I have faith in myself and to show what I can do." |
