Louis van Gaal believes he deserves credit for having the “guts” to play Marcus Rashford and likened the Manchester United striker to Patrick Kluivert at the same age.
Asked if Paul McGuiness, United’s former Under-18 coach who left the club in February, and Warren Joyce, the Under-21 coach, deserved praise for helping to get Rashford “ready” for first-team action, Van Gaal said: “They [young players] are not ready, I’m sorry. Also Marcus Rashford is not ready, he knows that. He can learn a lot.
“You always need guts to put youngsters in the squad and also in the line-up, but of course the academy and all the academy coaches have credit for these players and also the scouts who discovered these boys.
“I am a little part of it. But that part is very important because you need the guts to do that [put them in the team].”
