KUCHING: tHe Spring Shopping Centre will be launching the final phase of its retail spaces in June.
The retail spaces will have a new and exciting concept on its second floor, which is geared for the young, hip, quirky, fun and active generation Y and X target market group.
There will be 13 consessionaires of fully renovated smaller shops with floor size ranging from 100sq ft to 300sq ft, three food and beverage spaces, and three kiosks for lease.
Leading the floor for entertainment is the cinema operated by MBO Cinema from Peninsular Malaysia and a karaoke.
tHe Spring head of Leasing Andy Song said: “We are bullish as there is a gap in the market at this point of time for this target market in Sarawak for good clean fun, and we believe that this innovative group will find the floor refreshing and new to the standard; similar to those more mature markets in West Malaysia and abroad.”
Song said this at the launch of tHe Spring Final Phase and MBO Cinema at its conference room yesterday.
With a total retail space of 110,000sq ft, the second floor will house anchor tenants like Parkson, MBO Cinema, karaoke, restaurants, cafes and related retail stores, he said.
“Invitations to lease are now open to all suitable entrepreneurs especially young diver Generation Y-ers who are keen to start a business in the retail industry,” said Song.
He added that with a high population of savvy, young working adults in Kuching, Swinburne University and Inti College just a stone’s throw away plus numerous other schools within reach of tHe Spring’s, Kuching’s contemporary and youthful shoppers will find the floor concept refreshing and new.
“As a global and local market contract under the economic crisis, it is important to be able to create value innovation and remain relevant for the growing long-term market share,” said Song.
Housed under one roof, tHe Spring Shopping Centre offers shoppers modern conveniences, gourmet supermarket, leading department store, entertainment and more for locals and tourists to the state, he said.
He added that there are multiple accesses to the second floor during and after operational hours via the escalator from the first floor (near Padini Concept Store) or via Parkson’s household department or via lift from the alfresco lift lobby near Ta Kiong Supermarket.
On top of that, cinema and karaoke goers have exclusive access from the lift lobby and staircase which will remain open after the shopping centre’s operational hours, said Song.

Among those present at the launch were tHe Spring managing director James Ling, senior manager Jenny Lim and MBO Cinema chief operating officer Ikmal Nizam Ariffin.
KUCHING: MBO Cinemas will open a new eight-screen cineplex here in June, its first in East Malaysia and sixth overall.
The cineplex, located on the top floor of The Spring shopping mall, will have a total seating capacity of 1,584 with the largest hall accommodating 426 patrons.
Chief operating officer Ikmal Nizam Ariffin (pic) said the company planned to spend about RM8mil to open the cineplex.
”We will be spending about RM800,000 to RM1mil per hall,” he told reporters after the launch of MBO Cinemas’ partnership with The Spring late last week.
He said MBO was moving into the Sarawak market as the time was right for a new cineplex to make its entry.
”The market is big in Kuching and we hope to capture at least 60% of it,” he said.
He added that besides Kuching, MBO will also be setting up new outlets in Johor Baru and Klang this year.
The Johor Baru cinema is expected to open in June while the Klang outlet will probably be ready in the third quarter of this year.
MBO currently has cineplexes in Ampang, Kluang, Malacca, Seremban and Batu Pahat.
Ikmal Nizam said the Kuching cineplex, with eight halls, will be the company’s second largest after the 10-hall cineplex in Ampang.
He said special features in the Kuching cineplex will include a 3D projector and “couple seats” for pairs.
”The 3D projector will be MBO’s first and it will be placed in the largest hall. We will also have one hall designated for couple seats which can accommodate about 50 pairs,” he said.
Meanwhile, The Spring’s head of leasing Andy Song said the mall will launch its final phase of retail space on its second floor in June.
”This will mainly be an entertainment floor targeted at the younger market, those aged between 15 and 35,” he said.
He said the floor would be anchored by MBO Cinemas as well as a karaoke outlet. In addition, there will be 13 retail concessionaires, three food and beverage outlets and three kiosks.
