Shuttler Kien Keat all fired up to conquer Europe again
PETALING JAYA: Doubles shuttler Koo Kien Keat is all fired up to plunder again on European soil.
Last year, the 23-year-old Kien Keat in his partnership with Tan Boon Heong won three Super Series titles in Europe – in England, Switzerland and Denmark.
And they will begin the defence of the All-England crown in Birmingham tomorrow. The All-England is the third leg of the Super Series after Malaysia and South Korea.
The flamboyant Kien Keat said that he took delight in playing in Europe.
“Europe hosted four legs of the Super Series last year and we won in three of them. Playing in Europe certainly brings the best out of us,” said Kien Keat.
“The only blemish in Europe last year was in the French Open. We were beaten in the quarter-finals. Hopefully, we will make a record clean sweep in Europe this year.”
Kien Keat said that he was in better form than he was during the Malaysian Open two months ago.
At the Malaysian Open, Kien Keat-Boon Heong failed in the defence of the title, losing tamely to Shuichi Sakamoto-Shintaro Ikeda of Japan in the second round. They will play the same Japanese pair in the opening round of the All-England.
“I am not being over confident but I would reckon that Boon Heong and I are in better form. We certainly played well in the recent Thomas Cup qualifying round (in Vietnam last month),” said Kien Keat.
“We are more confident of ourselves. Boon Heong have also found some of his old touches. But having said that, we will not make the same mistake of under-rating our opponents. We are mentally prepared for the task ahead and hopefully, we will be able to justify it by winning the title.”
If Kien Keat-Boon Heong get past the Japanese, they are expected to take on Indonesians Joko Riyadi-Hendra Gunawan for a place in the quarter-finals. In their quarter are two Danish pairs – Jens Eriksen-Martin Lundgaard Hansen and Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen.
In the other quarter half of the draw are top seeds Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng of China, the American-Indonesian pair of Tony Gunawan-Candra Wijaya; South Koreans Lee Jae-jin-Hwang Ji-man and Malaysians Gan Teik Chai-Lin Woon Fui. |
