Pictures: Is the Star Alliance heading down the pan? ANA Boeing 777 nose art depicts pilot on toilet
Japan has a wealth of toilet history, from the female urinals of the Meiji era to today's automated bidet basins and is well-known for its fastidious washroom etiquette. However, an image circulating around aviation enthusiast pages of the internet appears to show a greater level of celebration of bodily functions.
The Skyone aviation discussion forum on Yahoo! Groups has seen in recent weeks a photo purporting to show a Boeing 777 belonging to All Nippon Airlines (ANA). The nose of the aircraft displays artwork designed to make onlookers believe the pilot is squatting on a toilet bowl (pictured below).
However, flightglobal.com has yet to confirm whether or not the photo is real, or has been digitally manipulated. ANA has not issued any official release stating that it intends to add unique paint jobs to each of its fleet.
However, the Japan Toilet Association does celebrate an unofficial Toilet Day on 10 November (because in Japan the numbers 11/10 can be read as ii-to (ire), which also means "good toilet". Perhaps ANA tried out the livery in secret in preparation for a roll-out later in the year.
If any readers know the provenance of this picture and what (if any) ANA's involvement is, flightglobal.com web editor Justin Wastnage would love to receive an email.
