American english is more commonly used nowadays as we can see that most of the songs we listen to, and the dramas/movies we watch are from US, eg: the vampire diaries, glee, etc.
Anyway, american accent is easier to learn and imitate.
Even i have the american accent, but i prefer british accent because it's kinda sexy ^^
Actually it doesn't matter which accent you have, language is just a tool for communication.
The difference between american english and british english is the 'r' and the 't' sounds
In US, the native speakers pronounce the r sound in the words, but british usually drop it.
eg: first, another, car
People choose their own accents, and speak in the way they want to.
Lastly, i have to say that accent is not that important! Unless you want to go oversea to study or something. In this case, you have to adapt yourself to them so that they can understand you better.
The most important thing is don't speak broken english!
