the venue is change

the venue for Pingstage Theatre Award 2005 is change to
Pangguang Bandaraya DBKL, Jln Raja Laut ( Near Dataran Merdeka)
at the corner of Jalan Tun Perak and Jalan Raja and is attached to the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate and Session Court Building.

Panggung Bandaraya, ( Old Town Hall)

吉隆坡市政局礼堂,处于独立广场一区。当您在草场望向大钟楼,请转头望向左边,过了河另一座和大钟楼一模一样的建筑物。那栋楼旁有个停车场。那个入口处就是 Panggung Bandaraya DBKL.

请记得每逢周末,六点独立广场封路。
地图我暂时不懂弄上来,对不住。

Celebrating Chinese theatre

Linda Ang is all set to be the emcee for the 5th Theatre Awards.
THE Theatre Awards for the Chinese theatre community of Malaysia enters its fifth year with a new round of nominations for 12 awards, including best actor and actress, best supporting actor and actress, best director, best original script writing and other technical support awards.

The best drama award will be the highlight for this year’s round of nominations.

“The Theatre Awards have become the most recognised and trustworthy drama award in the Chinese theatre community of Malaysia,” said Sunny Ng, the 5th Theatre Awards production director during a press conference last week.  

“It has played its role in gathering theatre activists and providing a formal and healthy competition between each other in order to boost and promote drama activity.”  

The nominee list was announced through a multimedia presentation and sees two names in the theatre scene that can be considered as “newcomers” in Chinese theatre.

Acclaimed and popular names Patrick Teoh and Nell Ng have already been actively involved in Malaysia’s English theatre community for many years, but this will be the first time they’re crossing over into Chinese language theatre.

Teoh is among the nominees for the best actor award for his role in the Cantonese-language production Chup, We Are Family, while Ng, one of Kuala Lumpur’s most comic characters in numerous theatre, film and TV productions is nominated for best actress award for the same play.

Said Patrick Teoh during the press conference, “I was indeed very surprised. I thought it was a joke when I was informed about the nomination, as this is my first Chinese theatre ever in my life.”

Former WaFM DJ, K.K. Wong is nominated for best new actor for his role in The Actors Studio Mandarin-language version of William Shakespeare’s Taming of The Shrew.

Among productions, PingStag Consult & Services’ Black & White – Crazy Ghost Story leads the nominations listings with nine, Taming of The Shrew with eight, and Dramatic Art Society’s Three Children, with seven.

Supported by the Ministry of Culture, Arts & Heritage and Yayasan CNI, the awards 5th Theatre Awards will be held this Sunday from 8pm at the Auditorium Taman Budaya, KL.  

To hype up the event, Hong Kong               multi-award winner theatre cum TVB series actress Law Koon-Lan will be the special guest that night. The event will be emceed by Linda Ang. Admission is free with ticket.  

Ticket redemption is only available this Wednesday and Thursday from 1pm to 8pm at the Pingstage office, Lot 1.29c, Ue3, Plaza Uncang Emas, 85, Jalan Loke Yew, KL. For more information call % 03–9200 8599.

THEATRE: Coming together for arts’ sake

FUNNY how almost everything – from politics to education to the very social fabric that surrounds us are divided by just a simple word. Language.
Even the liberal and progressive world of the performing arts is still bound by language. For marketing purposes, the language (or languages) you speak would usually be the determining factor of which ‘class’ you belong to.

As it is, in Malaysia, if you’re able to speak English, you are ‘educated’. No matter what doctorate you possess, your inability to communicate in English might just place you in the ‘less urban’ market.

In the theatre community, people seem to be more proud if they happen to be in the Malaysian English theatre faction.

However, more often than not, the real passion comes from the fringe fraternity who would produce heart-felt productions that might just be relevant to everyone, no matter what the language.

Due to the ‘language barrier’, each faction in the theatre community would traverse on its own and survive independently.

Chinese language theatre in Malaysia, as compared to its English-speaking counterpart, for instance, is no doubt still in its infancy.

It’s true that English language theatre has more ‘mass appeal’ with the bigger audience it commands. The educated, middle-class public of all the three major races and the ‘lain-lains’ have most likely watched a play or two. But how many English-educated Chinese (who can understand some Chinese dialects) have watched a Chinese-language play?

And in recent years, English-language theatre productions have enjoyed more support from corporations as main sponsors and partners.

When it comes to shows in vernacular languages, things aren’t so rosy. Everything – from the sponsorship and budget, the publicity it receives in the media right down to the human resources and logistics – is limited.

But make no mistake though. Chinese theatre is still thriving. And there has been a group of passionate theatre practitioners – whether on stage or behind the stage – devoting themselves to helping Chinese theatre flourish.

While the Boh Cameronian Arts Awards, which honours excellence in English theatre, will be in its fourth year in March, Chinese theatre has its equivalent – albeit on a smaller scale. And it has been held for five years now.

Formerly known as ‘PingStage Drama Award’, the 5th Theatre Awards presentation ceremony was held at Panggung Bandaraya last Sunday where it honoured theatre veterans and new talents in the Chinese theatre scene.

The fact that this awards event is a year older than the Boh Cameronian Awards says a lot.

In fact, the 5th Theatre Award ceremony itself deserves to win for ‘Best Local Award Presentation’ (if there’s such an award) in terms of entertainment value, smooth organisation and a highly-charged atmosphere.

The event also proved it doesn’t need an elaborate set design to hold a memorable show.

It had many heart-felt moments but its climax must be the announcement by Actors Studio and Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre’s executive producer Datuk Faridah Merican that the Theatre Awards could use KLPAC as its venue next year – for free!

That news was greeted fervently with loud cheers and applause. It’s good news indeed – perhaps signalling the start of closer links between Chinese and English theatre?

And why not, when two English theatre actors – Patrick Teoh and Nell Ng – were Theatre Awards nominees for Best Actor and Best Actress respectively in Ling Tang’s Chup! Take a Break – We Are Family.

Though neither won, both turned up at the event to show their support.

Also, for the first time, two ‘heavyweights’ in English and Chinese theatre – Faridah and Soon Choon Mee, Chinese theatre pioneer and teacher, presented a theatre award together for Best Director.

And the amiable Faridah even attempted to speak a line in Mandarin and said her favourite directors were already found in the hall that night, boosting the morale of many.

In fact, Faridah’s Actors Studio had produced and staged a nominated play, Taming of The Shrew and she’s noted as an avid supporter of Chinese theatre.

The ceremony was helmed by an all-female emcee team of Linda Ang, Grace Looi and Sue Tan. The three vivacious and lively hosts are involved in theatre.

The night’s biggest winner was the quirky play of the nether world – PingStage’s Black & White – Crazy Ghost Story – which swept six awards including Best Drama, Best Director, Best Original Script, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Image Design.

Judging from the audience’s reaction, it surely deserved the glory.

Flamboyant radio deejay K.K.Wong, who made his acting debut in Taming of the Shrew, garnered the first award presented – for Best New Actor in the role as the hilarious Petruchio.

“I’m the oldest. Sorry to all you young nominees but your turn will come,” he said cheekily. “People may say that I dabble in many areas but I must say that in whatever I do, I give my best.’’

The side-splitting, Cantonese version of Taming of The Shrew was also a strong contender with eight nominations and gave Berg Lee his first Best Actor award.

Lee, who played Lucentio, was called a ‘theatre super whiz kid’ by presenter and director Ho Shih Phin.

Looking dazed and slightly shaken, and with tears in his eyes, Lee went on to thank his parents and his co-workers in the theatre.

Chin Lee Ling’s brilliant performance as ‘Men Po’, the woman in hell, in Black & White – Crazy Ghost Story was well rewarded as she was named Best Actress.

Chin, who assisted director Ho tremendously in researching the play, said she hardly had a ‘clue what her role was but learned much along the way’.

Presenting the Best Actor and Actress awards was Law Koon Lan, an experienced theatre and TV actress from Hong Kong who gave some valuable tips to all.

“At times I’ve felt like giving up, and I wonder whether it was all worth it. But now, I know I’ve stuck to my craft because I’m passionate about it,” said Law in Mandarin and Cantonese, and looking splendid in a red dress.

“So it must be so for all of you too – don’t give up but continue to pursue your dreams and passions and make the best of your craft!”

Her speech obviously struck a chord with many of the theatre practitioners in the hall.

In between presentations, there was special mention of the four plays nominated for Best Drama – Blanche, Taming of The Shrew, Three Children and Black & White – Crazy Ghost Story. The audience was treated to some creative and hilarious spoofs of the plays performed by young actors from TEA Theatre.

One ‘mini play’ that totally brought the house down was Blanche – a Chinese adaptation of Tennesse William’s A Streetcar Named Desire – where two men, one a cross-dresser, enacted the seduction and rape scene of the classic play .

Though Blanche didn’t win for Best Drama, it certainly left an indelible impression on the audience.

The evening culminated with the Best Drama Award presentation. Ho, Chin and the cast and crew of Black & White – Crazy Ghost Story hit the stage again to receive the accolade from guest-of-honour Chow Wai Moon, senior secretary to Deputy Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister, together with president of Yayasan CNI Liu Tian Ji and PingStage advisor Leong Chi Seng.

《三个小孩》:

你就是个总经理,对一部戏,不管结构、剧本等,都需下足功夫。《三个小孩》曾在10年及6 年前排演过,最近才在机缘下受邀到上海戏剧节演出。《三》对上海而言,算是新的尝试,因中国一向着重写实。除了灯光及布景不一样,《三》保留了掺杂广东及方言的台词:虽然在本地观众并不感陌生,中国观众却觉惊讶(对现场伴奏亦然)。比起本地,上海有很多艺专毕业的专业演员,演技相较下扎实得多。

《黑白无常、鬼话连篇》:

《黑白无常、鬼话连篇》起初是想搞杂耍,来一个聚歌舞、胡闹于一体的热闹演出。结果是意料之外的,虽与想像中的走调,不过有一定的内容,而且添加了感性的部分。有人认为《黑》很不协调,胡闹时很胡闹,感性时又很感性,建议干脆选一而终,不过原本得构思就是以胡闹为主,所以我还是保留最原本的味道。

对于《驯悍记》,我认为壹龄在原剧上加了不少新元素,不被钉死在莎士比亚的影子下,显得丰富又亲切。而且演员的调度(从安排走位到演出层次)都相当自如。相比之下,《糖果屋历险记》就不见丰富后的内容,只见丰富后的形式(如皮影戏)。至于复生的《三个小孩》,演员资深,角色揣摩发挥得淋漓尽至。铺排很好,不过有点杂散,一段与一段戏之间的衔接点,像是个别的东西。这样的做法未免有点贪心了。

至于戏剧不成气候的说法,我们搞戏剧的还是爱这片土,认为还有希望。政府也开始注意到中文戏剧给予辅助。关于专业的人才,胥视普罗大众的鉴赏品味及接受度。态度嘛,都是累积下来的问题,中文剧场有点像“有空来打麻将”的坏习惯。年轻的又没受过正统的训练,就很难创造一个“专业”文化出来。(小记:本地艺人Patrick Teoh指出,英语剧场虽较有纪律及专业精神,不过中文剧场却有热爱及愿意来彩排的新血且演员较年轻)。

怎样经营本地中文剧场,是个阶段性的问题,媒体的报道同样是蛮重要的。演出消息发放固然重要,不过演出后的客观评定更是难得一求。剧评是有待再加强,除了《凭舞台》季刊,当今各大报章似乎还没有设此版位。再来就是剧评书写的专业少之又少,叶伟章是其中的可取之才。

《糖果屋历险记》及《驯悍记》:

不论在人生还是剧场,自己还年轻,在大马我是幸运的,不需要太“专业”就可以将作品呈现出来。写剧本的功力可能连芽都还没萌,不足的作品就得拿出来献丑。能入围像是参加派对游戏般。看看本地剧场,虽有一定的成熟,有成长但并不是大飞跃。10年前到北京留学,中国剧场非常老套、剧场欠纪律、人力财力都比这边难,马来西亚反而更胜一筹。10年后,本地剧场却相形见绌。

美国爱德华、前苏联契柯夫的剧本(有远见又赋带哲学)都是我的最爱。东方人的艺术表达方式不一样,不妨留意东方剧作家高行健及曹禺的作品。中国新生代剧场导演孟京辉,充其量是不错的小剧场,标榜“前卫”有待商议,不过他成功突显出地方色彩,反映当代社会的民生问题及面貌,台词往往还会变成流行语呢!

他有非常强的洞察力,找出人民的共鸣。虽说话剧是舶来品,不过赖声川这“天生”舞台剧导演,为马来西亚新血编织了不少想参与剧场的梦。开放及狭窄是相对的。

《第5屆戲炬獎頒獎典禮》
即將引爆

大馬中文劇場唯一的純舞台劇頒獎禮“戲炬獎”,即將像一場小型奧斯卡那樣舉辦。邁入第5屆的“戲炬獎”,將讓一班刻苦養活理想的戲劇工作者獲得肯定。獎項重要嗎?在看似茫然的戲劇工作之中,認同與肯定似乎是讓戲劇工作者繼續向前的動力。《第5屆戲炬獎頒獎典禮》,如果你來了,就會有更多的人能見證大馬中文劇場的努力。

就此屆戲炬獎入圍名單中較具有話題性的入圍獎項,作者分別採訪了以下評選委員劇場工作者,讓頒獎典禮在正式引爆之前,先來個熱身。


林智豪∕評選委員之一
畢業自MIA戲劇系的林智豪,本身是Astro電視台的節目宣傳。打從第一屆的戲炬獎開始,他便出任評選委員,唯獨第3屆和第4屆他並沒出當評審。

最佳戲劇

今年入圍最佳戲劇的有《白蘭曲》、《馴悍記》、《三個小孩》和《黑白無常&#8231;鬼話連篇》。談及今年的入圍作品,林智豪說:“入圍的四部戲劇都是被我們認為比較好的,評審之間意見非常一致。而我自己比較屬意《黑》和《三》。因為這兩部作品的整體表現比較平均,較有深度。”

林智豪坦言,2005年的大馬中文劇場並沒有太突出的作品。“我沒看到真正好的作品,但入圍作品都符合入圍標準。但今年的入圍作品,《白》和《馴》導的都是名著,劇本對一部作品有很大的影響,是劇本提高了作品整體的,但我發現導演手法並無法胜於劇本。就算是導名著,也要看導演的創意去到那裡,導名著也有導名著的手法,雖然是好的劇本,但導演的手法也必須有功力。”

最佳原創劇本

說起最喜愛的劇本,林智豪說,他其實很喜歡《三》。“但那是從英文劇本翻譯過來的,所以不能被納入最佳原創劇本的討論方中。《三》很有深度,它從懷舊的角度切入,表現出人文關懷。”

林智豪覺得今年的原創劇本表現不太理想,除了收件很少之外,好的原創劇本更是買少見少,是令評審最煩惱的獎項。

賀世平∕《黑白無常&#8231;鬼話連篇》編劇兼導演

往年都沒參賽的賀世平,一參賽,便以《黑》入圍9個獎項,成績令人側目。問賀世平是否驚訝於《黑》的成績,他說他感到些許驚訝之後,卻開始對《黑》的戰績沒強烈地感到意外。

“看了2005年中文劇場全年的戲劇,作品都不太好,沒有特別特出的作品。所以,《黑》可能剛好撿了這個便宜吧。在排《黑》時,其實不知道自己在做什麼,只是知道要把好玩的東西放在劇中,例如相聲、雜技、變魔術等。後來加入了演員,才慢慢變成玩鬧中帶著感性的。”

賀世平說,《黑》排得很辛苦,因為那是全新的創作。初時,他完全沒敲定這部戲的結構和故事,只有人物。待我把全部好玩的部份都放進去了,才來找主題背後的意義。後來終於有了故事,卻又兜不回來。”

除了賀世平之外,《黑》其實是全體演員皆參與其中的集體即興創作,就像他之前的作品《Stop》。在大馬中文劇場極度缺乏原創劇本的情況之下,賀世平說:“我不是崇尚這種劇本創作方式,但它是值得被鼓勵的。透過這樣的方式,也許可以創作出更多劇本。”

入圍多個獎項,賀世平最有信心獲獎的是最佳原創劇本獎,而這也是他最想要得到的肯定。《黑》戰績勇猛,唯一讓賀世平遺憾的是男主角沒入圍。“但其實在《黑》上演時,很多人看了都跟我說,因為劇情和整個結構的關系,男女主角的發揮不大,反而配角後來卻變成了主角。”

鄧壹齡∕《馴悍記》、《糖果屋歷險記》及《Chup!We Are Family》導演

鄧壹齡其實也是本地難得的多產導演,對於這次同時以《馴悍記》及《糖果屋歷險記》入圍最佳導演獎(其餘兩個入圍導演分別是文复聲∕《三個小孩》及賀世平竹《黑》),她說其實沒什么特別的感覺。

“因為在這個階段,整個戲劇行業仍未成熟,被提名過一次已經是鼓勵。我會希望10年後才得這個獎,而不是現在,我覺得自己仍未到這個階段。我從北京畢業回來4年,作為一個導演,我想我還很年輕,生活閱歷還不夠,對生命的看法不夠有深度。我對自己的期待很高。”

而鄧壹齡最為看好賀世平的《黑》。“我喜歡整部戲出來的感覺,導演手法很大氣,很干凈、豪爽,這是我所缺乏的。《黑》是賀世平第一次講述愛情的作品,我很驚訝,他竟然可以這麼感性地帶出愛情。他以前的作品,情感濃度都沒這麼高。”

劉錦康∕《當我們同在一起》、《紅姐姐不見了》編劇、造型設計、舞台美術設計

向來集編導及幕後製作於一身的劉錦康,這次以《紅姐姐不見了》入圍最佳舞台美術設計及最佳造型設計兩個獎項。在兩個與“美”及設計有關的獎項看見劉錦康的名字,似乎看見劉錦康鮮為人知的才能,讓人覺得有些意外。

他說:“以前我也以《再見打架魚》入圍過最佳舞台美術設計獎。我雖然念戲劇系,但向來都有參與美術、布景設計的工作。我中學曾醉心於美術,初時想念的是純美術,不是戲劇。但中學時也常表演,所以當朋友告訴我MIA裡頭的戲劇系,可以同時擁有跨領域的參與,我便決定念戲劇系。”

相比於最佳造型設計獎,劉永康直言更想獲得最佳舞台美術設計獎。“因為我真的花很多心思在《紅》的舞台設計,而且以前設計的都比較沒有機動性。這次,我們會把燈降下來,會把整片布景拉出,也會讓花亮起來。所以我蠻希望得這個獎的。”

李承耘∕《馴悍記》男主角

曾經蟬聯兩屆最佳男主角的李承耘,如果這一屆再以《馴悍記》奪得最佳男主角這個獎項,那他將再創一個新紀錄:唯一三屆連奪最佳男主角的演員。

然而,對於這次的入圍,他坦言沒有太大的感覺。“比較有感覺的是蟬聯的那一屆。第一次被提名,我志在參與,第二次得獎,我心裡覺得這很難得。現在,會覺得得獎是錦上添花。反而,能夠完成一個作品已經很滿足。而且,我覺得這次自己的機會也不大。

當李承耘知道自己入圍最佳男演員時,非常驚訝,因為他一直以為自己在《馴》裡只是個大配角。“這角色發揮不大,如果我是演KK演的那個角色,會比較有機會。”

演技已獲得多方肯定的李承耘,倒希望往後能多參與獨立電影的演出和製作。

戲炬獎簡介

憑舞台成立於1994年,2001年,開始設立第一屆戲炬獎,藉此給予本地中文戲劇工作者表揚及鼓勵。戲炬獎是大馬中文戲劇唯一純舞台劇的頒獎禮,被本地中文劇場視為年度一大盛事。除了全國各地的戲團、戲劇工作者和劇迷會參與其盛之外,今年,來自香港的資深舞台劇演員羅冠蘭也會出席。

由資深劇場工作者吳國煌出任製作總監的第5屆戲炬獎,自年頭開始便組成了一組評選委員會,在2005年之中,評選委員會必須觀看每一部在雪隆上演的戲劇,然後評分。這一屆的評選委員會成員包括舞台劇導演賀世平、舞台劇演員葉美玲、舞台劇導演兼導師李永強、戲劇碩士王文真、戲劇工作者林智豪、MY FM 節目總監李志成、作家兼V-MAG雜志總編張瑋栩及藝術工作者黃菲立。
