26 JULY 2014 @ 8:05 AM
PUTRAJAYA: THE cancellation of the cabinet ministers’ 2014 Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house is a message to the world that Malaysians are united and share in the sorrow of the family members of peole onboard Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH17.
Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the incident affected all Malaysians.
“It is inappropriate for us to be in a merry mood and celebrating (Hari Raya) as normal when the victims’ bodies are waiting for post-mortem,” he said after announcing the lDigital Malaysia “State of the Digital Economy” update here yesterday.
The Prime Minister’s Office had announced that the cabinet ministers’ open house event in conjunction with Aidilfitri at the Seri Perdana Complex in Putrajaya was cancelled as a mark of respect to those who perished in the flight MH17 crash.
Cabinet also agreed to cancel the 2014 Malaysia Aidilfitri open house, organised by the Tourism and Culture Ministry, scheduled to be held in Rembau, Negri Sembilan.
Ahmad Shabery also urged Malaysians to be present at KL International Airport in Sepang or Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, Subang when the remains were brought back from the Netherlands as a mark of condolence.
“We want to show the world that Malaysians are united and are together in sadness from this loss.
“The world must know and not allow those responsible to get away,” he said.
The Boeing 777-200, which was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, went down in Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, near the Russian border, on July 17.
It was carrying 298 people — 283 passengers and 15 crew — and was believed to have been shot down. No one had yet claimed responsibility for the incident.
Ahmad Shabery said the government had yet to make any decision on the Merdeka celebrations in light of the MH17 tragedy.
State governments have also cancelled or postponed their open house events in conjunction with Aidilfitri as a mark of respect for victims of MH17.
Even though the whole nation is saddened by the tragedy, Muslims are still obliged to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri after observing the fast during Ramadan. This year’s Aidilfitri celebrations can still be held in moderation and with decorum.
