Thomas & Uber Cup Qualification discontinued

In a mailing on Friday 22 June 2012 to all Continental Confederations, it was officially announced by BWF that the Thomas & Uber Cup Qualification would be discontinued with immediate effect.

Rumours about this change had reached Badminton Europe Confederation already some months earlier. It was clearly formulated to BWF that Badminton Europe Confederation was very happy with the current system and would prefer that no change was made. The strong participation from Member Associations spoke for itself and that in itself gave value to the competition. Certainly it was also an important factor that this was the only team event in even years where players would gather important world Ranking points.

The argument from BWF was basically that the Thomas & Uber Cup Finals had too many matches that were not competitive due to teams qualifying through a Continental quota system.

The initial proposal was to have the Thomas & Uber Cup Finals with 12 teams and invite teams based on the world ranking. Therefore it was a surprise to Badminton Europe that the change presented was with the parameters below:

New Thomas/Uber Cup structure

As per the Memo from the Events Department, the Thomas/Uber Cup structure has been changed. From 2014 the following structure applies:

o There will no longer be a Continental based qualification tournament for the Finals. Teams will be invited to the Thomas/Uber Cup Finals from their World Ranking position – calculation made as per the present seeding rules.

o A continental quota has been introduced, so a minimum of 1 team (either Thomas Cup or Uber Cup team) from each continent will qualify.

o Furthermore a minimum of 3 team from Asia and Europe will qualify in both Thomas Cup and Uber Cup.

o The total number of teams will be 16 in both Thomas and Uber Cup.

A finals of 16 teams does not seem to address the issue that initiated the thoughts on the new system. There will be 4 weaker teams added to the competition. Badminton Europe Confederation do embrace the principle of Continental Representation. It is important that our major competitions represents the universal nature of our sport.

In Europe, the Thomas & Uber Cup Qualification was also known as the European Men’s & Women’s Team Championships. After careful consideration Badminton Europe Confederation decided to still organise this competition in 2014 and onwards despite the changed status and despite the BWF funding being removed. We believe that this competition is important for our Member Associations and we are in fact going to leverage on the setup of this event to have the first European U15 Championships being played alongside the event in 2014.

从欧羽联的文章看，各大洲只确保1个名额入选决赛（这1个名额可以是汤杯也可以是尤杯，但不是汤尤各1个），而又追加一条那就是欧亚确保汤尤各3个名额。换句话说，欧亚汤尤可以各自有3个保底名额（即各有3汤3尤），而三大洲却只有1个保底名额而且这个名额或汤或尤。换句话说，三大洲原来的总共3汤3尤的保底名额（6个）变成了现在的3个汤或尤的保底名额（3个），而欧亚保底名额不变。也就是说，汤尤队伍各增加了4个，但三大洲名额却消减了一半。这个三大洲能同意吗？如今欧洲也不赞同，算上三大洲那五大洲之中就有四洲不赞同，这个改制是咋通过的？

俺以前就说过，这个改制就是图利马羽。因为如果不增加队伍而按照原来的12队来看，马羽尤杯入围不但肯定没戏（世界排名位列亚洲第十，世界第十二）而且汤杯也是很悬的，因为当下马羽汤杯世界排名位居亚洲的中国、韩国、印尼、日本之后位列第五，世界第六。而12队的制度规定：1卫冕+1东道+3亚+3欧+3洲+1公=12队。如果卫冕与东道是同一个队，那就是：1卫冕/东道+4亚+4欧+3洲=12队。大家看明白了吧，就目前而言，按照12队规定，亚洲最多有6个队参加汤姆斯杯。如果东道国兼任卫冕冠军或东道国不是亚洲国家，那亚洲最多就有5个队参赛。反观马羽，李宗伟、古陈在的时候就只排在亚洲第五，那要是两年后李宗伟、古陈退役了呢？你说马羽排在第几？马羽入汤不危险吗？所以，马羽把当初说好的12队改为了16队来确保马羽不但可以入汤而且可以入尤，同时消减三大洲一半名额加以再次确保。欧羽联认为这个最终决议并非原来的商定即在与此。


如果按照三大洲汤尤保底名额各一个的（共3X2=6个），那么最后入选名额按照2012年7月5日世界团体排名应该是这样的：
东道：待定/待定
卫冕：中国/中国
亚洲：7队（3内4公）/8队（3内5公）
欧洲：4队（3内1公）/3队（3内）
美洲：1队（1内-R18）/1队（1内-R14）
澳洲：1队（1内-R27）/1队（1内-R26）
非洲：1队（1内-R40）/1队（1内-R27）

如果按照三大洲汤尤保底名额只一个的（3X1=3个），那么最后入选名额按照2012年7月5日世界团体排名应该是这样的：

东道：待定/待定
卫冕：中国/中国
亚洲：8队（3内5公）/8队（3内5公）
欧洲：6队（3内3公）/3队（3内）
美洲：0队（0内-R18）/1队（1内-R14）
澳洲：0队（0内-R27）/1队（1内-R26）
非洲：0队（0内-R40）/1队（1内-R27）

亚洲至少在汤杯又增加一队，进一步确保马羽入汤。

欧羽联有一句话说得很到位，那就是最开始改制的原因是： 你BWF认为通过洲际预选赛上来的12队有的队实力弱使得决赛圈比赛不精彩，那你改制后搞出16队，比原来还多出4支打酱油的队伍，你这就精彩了？

欧羽联一阵见血的说出了改制的根本原因就是为了增加入选队伍，而绝不是为了提升汤尤杯比赛的精彩度。俺觉得增加名额的根本原因在于马羽为了确保自己的入选，否则这种矛盾百出的改制无法自圆其说。当然，马羽又是运气好，才打瞌睡就有人送枕头——世界羽联东迁马国以来，这种运气也不是第一次了，也是别国羡慕不来的。

THE EVENT FORMAT
A new format has been agreed for the 2014 edition of the Thomas & Uber Cup Finals which sees the end of the old qualifying zone competitions and instead the introduction of an expanded competition with 16 teams qualifying (each for Thomas & Uber Cup) in the following way:

Holders
Hosts
Next best 14 teams from the World Rankings
(the world ranking for each team is based on the combined points total of the highest 3 singles players and highest 2 doubles pairs eligible to represent that team in the World Rankings).

Continental Quota
The teams qualified shall include the highest ranked Thomas OR Uber Cup team from each of Africa, Pan Am and Oceania Continental Confederations.
There shall be a minimum of 3 teams from Europe and 3 from Asia (this total to be made up of the highest ranked teams from Europe and Asia and also to include holders and hosts where applicable).

Group stage
Teams are drawn into four groups of four teams with each team playing each other once to establish a group ranking. The two highest placed teams in the group rankings then go through to a knock out stage.

Knock out stage
A draw is held to determine who plays who in the knock out stage at the end of the Group stage. The first knock out stage is the quarter finals with the winner’s progressing through to the semi-finals and then the Final. There is no third place play off, both losing semi-finalists being awarded bronze medals.

    俺不针对任何队，但俺得说事实，至于马羽“运气”好，也是事实吧，那俺就说了这个事实，这能叫针对马羽吗？就像今年1-4月超级赛签位，俺只是统计事实，就把神玩吓得赶紧用一个滑稽的理由（他看不懂）给封帖沉底了，为什吗？因为铁一般事实无情的揭露了马羽“好运”的实质，神玩对此接受不了，他要逃避，所以就用掩耳盗铃的方式封帖沉底了。你可以看一看那个帖子。

呵呵，那请你指出俺的帖子里的不实之处，以证明你的“黑”马羽之说。

另，欧羽说出了结果不符合当初商定，莫非也在“黑”马羽？马羽怎么搞得人见人“黑”？

不实之处多的是。。。不胜枚举。。。从你最初那个不会算数的帖开始，很多版主网友包括我在内都多次不断指出你错误的地方。。。人家讲你错了你就耍太极带人游花园。。。就是不肯正面认错。。。

呵呵，神玩，俺提醒你一下，俺这个帖子是6月23日发的。快一个月了，你怎么才想起来扣分？俺今次修改只是将世界排名由6月的换成了7月的，其余什么都没变，新世界排名也违规？你已经讲不出任何理由了，建议直接将俺封号岂不是一了百了？只是不知道你是否有这个职权，呵呵。

    呵呵，不止你反对，四大洲都反对（欧洲已经公开声明了，三大洲被消减名额也一定不赞成），也不知道是咋通过的，估计下次年会可能有变故。
