The dragonboat incident

This is a very veryhard post to write, possibly one of the hardest post to write since thedeath of my grandmothers and yet, as a blogger who documents everythingthat goes on in her life, I feel the need to document this down as ithappened. And I feel the need to expose, or to tell the truth… of someof the things which were hidden or not told rightly by the press.

A tragedy, a mishap, an unforeseen accident, an expensive lesson for all of us.

Itwas around a little past 10 in the morning on Sunday when I received acall from my dad. I had skipped the dragonboat training today becauseerr.. it was inconvenient for me to do so. I answered the phone and atthe end of the line was my dad’s panic voice asking me if I was at thedragonboat training. I said no and asked why. He said there had been afreak accident. The boat overturned and there were a couple of peoplemissing and one of them happened to be his friend’s son.

Myheart sank when I heard the news. My entire body was shaking, my handsand feet turned cold and sweaty. He then asked if I could take him tothe place. I said ok and immediately jumped off from the bed, splashedsome water on the face, brushed my teeth, changed and all ready toleave the house in less than 10 minutes.

While I was driving tothe place, many things raced through my mind. My first instinct was tocall my friends to ask if they’re ok. They’re doing fine, the affectedones were the juniors who had rowed out earlier before the seniorsarrived. We talked bout the alternatives to get help. They hadapparently called for the police but only 2 arrived after half an hour. And they did nothing but to sit in the car with the air cond and read newspaper. Go figure~

SoI had to resort to calling my friend’s father, who used to be aninspector to see if he can be of any help. I reached her mother and shesaid she’ll try her best to contact some of the people they know. Afterthat, there was nothing we could do but to keep calling the authoritiesand hoped for help to arrive soon.

Help did arrive. But only after almost 2 hours. The ones that arrived before that could not do anything but walkedaround the perimeter waiting for more ‘help’ to arrive. Again, gofigure~

I walked in to the place with my dad in tow. He told methat his friend whose son was missing had been weak since he heard thenews and could not summon the effort to go to the place so he asked formy dad’s help to confirm the news. The walk seemed far when you’retrying to look for answers. People were scattered all over the place, Isaw some of the team members, all of them looking sad, worried, if notshocked.

We needed a confirmation, so we walked over to thefloating concrete near the sea, searching high and low for a familiarface. Actually it was my dad who was searching for his friend’s son andI was just lost cause I haven’t the faintest idea how the kid lookedlike. In the end, we had to ask.

‘Do you know Jason? Jason Ch’ng? Do you know where is he?’

Our hearts sank even lower when a kid with tears stricken face replied

‘Jason ar~ he’s still missing… he’s one of the 6 people who are missing’

Ilooked at my dad’s surprised face, trying to imagine what to do if Iwas in his position. How to call his friend to inform him the news. Howand what is the best way to deliver the news?

It was only thenthat I was aware of the other people around me. Some of the parents andfamily members of the kids had arrived at the scene. 2 sets of parentswere seen kneeling on the concrete crying, yelling, howling, callingout the names of their children for them to come back. Some were heardcrying and praying, while family members were trying their best toconsole them. The kids themselves who made it safe ashore were seencrying for their missing friends too. The whole scene was just….. heart breaking.

Mydad started to make some calls so I walked over to my friends to askfor an update. No one was really clear of what had happened until wetalked to one of the kids who were hospitalized at the end of the day.

Theywere finishing the normal training session and on their way back. Ithad been a tiring session, particularly when there were new rowers sothey took a break. No one really notice the waves were slowly sweepingthe floating boat towards a parked tug boat. The coach asked them toturn and keep rowing to avoid from hitting the other boat but you know, kids being kids, sometimes they just don’t listen. Perhaps they werewaiting for their friends to keep rowing while they rest and in theend, no one moved. And then the big waves came. It swept the boat andit overturned. The first turned threw 2 people off the boat, but theymanaged to cling onto the boat with the rest, then the second wavescame. The boat overturned again and this time, everyone was threw offthe boat and they were so near the tug boat that our boat waspractically sucked in by the underwater current halfway down into thetug boat (I hope I’m elaborating this right) Of course everyonepanicked. Some managed to cling on to the boat and drag themselves upabove the water and a fisherman boat who happened to past by saved themall.

All 12 but the 6 of them. A teacher, who was a newlyappointed advisor for their dragonboat team and also his first timerowing, and 5 other students, all aged between 16 and 17. My dad’s friend’s son happened to be one of the unfortunate ones.

Therewas nothing we could do except to hope for the best. Some of our fellowmembers borrowed some boats and went into rescue mode but came backlooking blank and sad. It was almost 11, almost 2 hours since theaccident and yet there were no divers at the spot! Only the police andthe emergency fire department were there.

Worried parents, relatives and more busybodies who just wanted to get a piece of the action started to crowd the place.

At11, a phone call was received by one of the students. The first bodywas found. Every parent was hopeful, running here and there asking theidentity of the body but no one knew until the body was brought up tothe shore.

It was the teacher’s body whom they found strappedunder the boat. Apparently his life jacket was caught at the end of theboat which prevented him from escaping. I will always remember theimage of his body being carried past right under my nose. Pale. Verypale. They covered his face with a t shirt. That’s when you know forsure… gone case.

More and more people arrived; authorities, politicians, paramedics, media, press, friends, more relatives, moreredundant busybodies. I cannotbelieve there was one aunty who even called her friends to come to thescene simply because there was something to see and to talk about!

Andthese insensitive bunch of reporters who kept taking pictures of cryingparents just for the headlines! Some of the parents scolded them butthey still snatched a picture or two before stopping. Man, I reallyfeel like cursing all of them.

Noon came. My dad’s friendfinally arrived but walked around the place aimlessly not knowing whatto do. Then my other family members came -_- my second uncle and hiswife, my mum and my grandpa. My mum was soooooooo happy I didn’t go tothe training that morning. And then she added ‘Don’t play this sport anymore. Look for something else to do’ Seconded by the others -_-

Peoplestarted to pray. The others followed. Volunteers from Tzu Chi walkedaround handing water to people, the students were treated for theirinjuries.

2.45pm, another body found. All parents rushed to thescene as they carried the body out. It was wrapped in a black plastic.Another hopeless case but everyone had to know, we had to made sure. Istood with my family at the side while the parents rushed to theambulance. They unzipped the body.... and even from where I was, loudmuffled screams and cried filled the air.

'JASSSSSOOOONNNNN!!!!!'followed by more cryings. From far, I saw my dad's friends burstinginto tears, trying to break free from my dad's grasps to rush to hisson. Everyone had to calm him down. I saw my dad's heart breaking faceand tears as he held on tight to his friends. Tears began to roll downmy cheeks (and I'm tearing as I elaborate this) Hopeful dreams andambition of parents were crushed right in front of us all.

Itwas then I learned that Jason had received a scholarship to pursue hisfurther education in the US or Russia. Now, it was all shattered dreams.

Mydad left with his friend and his families to the hospital, my familymembers left soon after. I stayed back with the team, feeling hopeless, not knowing what we can do to help except to pray and hope for thebest, but at least by being there, it offered some sort of peace in us.

Thefruitless search continued till nightfall. The team stuck togetherwaiting, just waiting... nothing decent to eat and drink but a bun andhalf a 'pau' with water and 100 plus the whole day.
